Subway: Beijing subway sign
Look for this sign and you will find a Beijing subway station. There are basically two lines: red line along the Jianguomen Dajie/Changan Dajie (east-west) and blue line, making a circle around the old town.

    Subway: Expensive/Cheap Transportation
    Wangfujing Subway Station - Beijing
    Wangfujing Subway Station

On the first day at Beijing, we took the subway from Tiananmen East to Xidan. The fare is 3RMB each, which works out to about 15RMB in total. This is more expensive compared to the taxi fare we took from Xidan back to the hotel at Wangfujing which cost us 14RMB. The fare of 3RMB is not distance related. On the 12-Dec, we took a subway from XiuShui Market back to Wangfujing at the same price.

Subway: Subway is cheap and on schedule, but...
Subway is cheap and on schedule, but... - also very packed during rush hours (7am-9am; 17pm-19pm) - not extensive. Currently there are only 5 lines (Line No.1,2,5,13 and Batong). Line No.1: Tian'anmen square (Forbidden City), Wangfujing shopping street, Silk Market Line No. 2 (Loop line): Temple of Heaven, Qianmen, BJ Train Station, Lama Temple, Drum and Bell Tower Line No. 5: Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple Good news is that more subway lines are under construction.

    Subway: Subway around the city
Take the subway for the fastest transportation around the downtown. There are only a few stations though so you might need to walk quite a distance before finding the entrance. Tickets are cheap although not as cheap as bus tickets. Locals dont use it that much and thus also seats are available always but during the rush hours. Stations are labeled in western alphabets also but get a subway map in advance or you wont know where to go.

    Subway: Beijing Subway
The Beijing Subway is the fastest way to get around, although it is not accessible from everywhere. If you need to catch a train at the Beijing Railway Station, the subway has a stop there and it is the quickest way there since the traffic near the railway station is horrible. If you don't have much luggage, let the taxi driver drive you to the nearest subway station instead all the way to the railway station. The fare for the subway is 3 yuan.

    Subway: subway, the ticket
The subway ticket costs 3 RMB. After you bought it at the ticket counter go to the ticket check. They will tear off a part, most chinese leave the entire ticket there tough. Tickets are never checked after this point. Proceed to the platform. More on buying a ticket and the subway on this website: http://www.beijingtraveltips.com/tips/subway_1/subway_tip_1.htm, see tip 2 for transfer tickets. And there is also a good map on this website.

    Subway: Cheap
The underground system in Beijing consists of one East-West line and a loop around the old city. In addition, there is a light rail in the north that joins up with the loop. Cheap and easy to traverse, it is unfortunately not an extensive system. If you are on a budget, this should be your first stop. A trip on the two main lines cost 3 RMB. Paper tickets can be bought at booths and are inspected before you go down to the platform. If you are here on a longer term visit, I suppose you can get hold of a long term prepaid contactless card, though I am not sure how. Destinations are announced clearly in both Chinese and English. Occasionally, vendors walk around the carriages selling road and rail maps of the city at a mere 1 RMB. Oh, yes. Be prepared to push your way through to get out of the train during rush hour. They do not seem to have learnt the merits of letter passengers alight before getting on.

Subway: The cheapest way to get around
This has to be the cheapest way to get around town just 3 RMB for a ride anywhere on the system.....that comes out to $0.32 US cents ....how can you beat that. The signs are easy to spot, it's safe...of course watch out for pickpockets....and all the signs are in English !!!! doesn't really go to all of the tourist attractions but too enough of them that there are walkable just lookout for the traffic !!!!
