Subway is cheap and on schedule, but... - also very packed during rush hours (7am-9am; 17pm-19pm) - not extensive. Currently there are only 5 lines (Line No.1,2,5,13 and Batong). Line No.1: Tian'anmen square (Forbidden City), Wangfujing shopping street, Silk Market Line No. 2 (Loop line): Temple of Heaven, Qianmen, BJ Train Station, Lama Temple, Drum and Bell Tower Line No. 5: Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple Good news is that more subway lines are under construction. The Beijing Subway is the fastest way to get around, although it is not accessible from everywhere. If you need to catch a train at the Beijing Railway Station, the subway has a stop there and it is the quickest way there since the traffic near the railway station is horrible. If you don't have much luggage, let the taxi driver drive you to the nearest subway station instead all the way to the railway station. The fare for the subway is 3 yuan. The underground system in Beijing consists of one East-West line and a loop around the old city. In addition, there is a light rail in the north that joins up with the loop. Cheap and easy to traverse, it is unfortunately not an extensive system. If you are on a budget, this should be your first stop. A trip on the two main lines cost 3 RMB. Paper tickets can be bought at booths and are inspected before you go down to the platform. If you are here on a longer term visit, I suppose you can get hold of a long term prepaid contactless card, though I am not sure how. Destinations are announced clearly in both Chinese and English. Occasionally, vendors walk around the carriages selling road and rail maps of the city at a mere 1 RMB. Oh, yes. Be prepared to push your way through to get out of the train during rush hour. They do not seem to have learnt the merits of letter passengers alight before getting on. Leave a Comment Theme: Subway/Metro
