Taxis: Taxi to the airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • I had my hostel in the south part of Beijing get my taxi for my trip to the airport. They charged me 140 RMB. The meter ended up saying 95 RMB and the driver had to pay10 RMB each way for the toll road. So I paid a little extra for the convenience. In my case the convenience was worth it because I had an oversized box that barely fit inside with the passenger seat folded down. I even tipped another 10 RMB because of the hassle and a bit of leaving the country generosity.

Coming in I took the airport bus and subway. Much cheaper, not so convenient.

Taxis: Whilst in Beijing you will...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Whilst in Beijing you will probably find it best to get around by taxi. It is best if you are looking around to get a taxi to the furthest point of your planned trip and then walk back. If you get tired you can always take another taxi. The medium sized yellow saloons were always pretty trustworthy but, the bigger ones sometimes tried it on.

  • Tip Rating:
  • TAXIs are quite inexpensive in peking, the have taxometers and usually work quite well.
A taxi from the airport to the center is about 80-100 Yuan (including express way toll 15.- yuan)
There are several categories of taxis:
1.20 yuan, 1.60 yuan or 2.00 yuan and so on.
If you have lots of bags, check the trunk - they are mostly small as they have gas-tanks in there!

  • Travel by Air

The Beijing Capital Airport is undoubtedly China's top air hub, with 98 international, 21 regional and 757 domestic air routes linking the capital with 54 cities ( excluding those in Taiwan Province) in 39 countries.More than 40 foreign airlines have set up booking offices in Beijing. See details in the Beijing Directory .

If it is your first time to Beijing, the best bet is to have your hotel send a shuttle bus to come and get you. The other option is to take a taxi. But don't go with the guys who come up to you and say' Hello, taxi?' They are people with private cars and there is no guarantee as to how much they will charge or whether you will get to you intended destination. The way to go is out the front door to the taxi line. There is usually a bit of a long line, but it moves fairly quickly as there are more than enough taxis waiting there at all times of the day. These drivers are reliable and will charge according to the meter. Remember to have a Chinese version of the address you are going to. The other and probably cheapest option is for those who are fairly familiar with the city. There are two airport bus lines that leave every 30 minutes.

    Taxis: Using Taxis
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cabs are a good way to get around and they are very inexpensive. Make sure that the driver starts the meter when you get into the cab because you don't want to have to argue about the fare when you get to your destination. Most drivers will lock the doors when you get in so you can't just get out unless you pay. I didn't have any problems with any of the cab rides that I took but I did hear some horror stories. One last thing to keep in mind is that most cab drivers don't speak English so it's a good idea to have either a map or yoour destination written down in Chinese.

Beijing taxis are both plentiful and cheap but they are small. Be aware that most taxi dirvers speak little or no English if you can - please show them in Chinese where you are going. if you find a place you like then take a business card - that way it is easy to return. First thing to do when you check into your hotel is take some hotel business cards - that way your taxi driver can take you home. Also try to pick up a map of Beijing - available in the many Beijing magazines with place names in English and Chinese - handy for showing your taxi driver where you want to go.

Taxis: Check the number on your taxi
Check the kilometer price of your taxis. In May 07 the taxis were either a 2 or a 3 (Yuan per km). The nr 2s are posted on a blue sticker on the backseat window. I got into a good tiff with a driver who had no number and claimed to be a 3 for a 45 minute trip (from Center of town to the Summer Palace) that was a considerable difference in price.

    Taxis: Cool,comfortable taxis.
Every time I got into a taxi in Beijing, I would sigh with relief. It was cool (air con!), quiet (the roads are very noisy!) and fast (no walk to the train stn/bus stop!). And cheap too, compared with other countries.

Remember to always tell the taxi drivers to use their meter!

I only used the taxis with black and green, or black and orange colors. They were the nicest. We caught a red taxi with spray-on black signs, to the airport, and it was terribly hot and stuffy, and smelled like fumes.

It's important to know the name of where you are going and how to say it in Chinese. Not all taxi drivers know how to read Chinese, so not always will your Chinese characters come in handy. Sometimes they may not be from Beijing, it's handy if you have a map and have an idea of where you are going.
