 | Beijing Warnings or Dangers | Tips 231 - 240 of 246 | | Watch out for the guy trying to take you to his club. Never get in someones car. Taxi's are too cheap, and I love riding the city bus. The bus is an experience in itself, but if you get lost, don't be afraid to ask for help getting to your destination. The Chinese people seem to find Honor is helping.

We got a lot of people coming up to us saying they were art students, and that they would like us to go and view their work nearby. we never went, but speaking to people who had, it was something of a scam, and people were given the hard sell on buying paintings from these "students." We went to Beidaihe with a group of friends in August 02,2 hours driving from Beijing. Maybe the reserved sea for "VIP" is good, but no clear water in open seaside. This picture will help you understand why we don't go there any more! Leave a Comment

What can i say about street (not market, they were quite fun) vendors. Well the only good thing I suppose you could say is that they were persistant. The street vendors in beijing were rude annoying and won't take no for an answer they followed one poor lady in or group four blocks try to sell her post cards. The best way I found to get rid of them was don't make eye contact and don't show the slightest bit of interest in what they are selling. And be firm say in a loud strong voice. "NO", I usually on;y had to repeat no 3-4 time before they moved onto someone else. Leave a Comment

When crossing the road at pedestrian crossings keep an eye out for cars coming towards you. It seems that drivers ignore Green Men signals and still carry on driving even though people are crossing the road. Leave a Comment

When visiting any market in Beijing you must bargain prices, otherwise, you will come out from the market without a penny. I want you to think about and focus in the following points: - Poor bargaining skills - Not knowing the local language - You are a foreigner, you are supposed to have money. The following interesting comment illustrates how important is the art of bargaining (you can actually see it at this link): “Author: ly_wan (lywan@cairnhill.com) I visited some of the places which listed by Nancy when I was in Beijing last November. It was great. But...remember to cut the price into half or even more. I bought a piece of lady blouse at Ya Xiu Market, the price stated was RMB 100.00. Well, I got it in RMB 50.00 but it was still consider expensive when one of my Beijing friend told me that, I actually can buy the blouse at only RMB 25.00. Oh, my god!” Understand?

When walking down the steep steps, do cling onto the rail - trust me you'd feel weird looking down the seem-like vertical drop. It apparently took longer going down then going up. There was this crazy chinese lad who had descended the stairs so fast that he knocked so many people aside at his path (me included). He fell on top of an old woman and a young child and they fell downwards with him.... luckily their injuries weren't that serious but the stupid lad got told big time by everybody around him.... The whole ordeal took my breath away in not a nice way. I was really anxious to get back down again but my legs couldn't stop shaking and I felt like crying. However it's worth going as it has tested my fear of height and the courage to carry on and don't give up. Leave a Comment

When we were walking thru Tianamen Square we were advised not to take pictures of the men in Uniform who might be "discussing topics" with protesters or folks handing out pamphlets. Leave a Comment

While this could happen anywhere in the world, in March 2007 a friend of mine had his mobile phone stolen by his taxi driver. Having had too much to drink and lost, my friend gave the phone to the driver so the person on the other end could give driving instructions. The driver delivered my friend to his destination, but neglected to return his phone to him. The moral might be not to get yourself so drunk that you lose track of what you're doing, but a corollary is don't depend on taxi drivers not to take advantage of you in such situations.
