Luggage and bags: pack light and have suitcase with rollers
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: bring things that can be layered. weather changes throughout day. bring a waterproof light coat also. it rained 3 out of the 7 days i was in beijing (May). i was fine with capris pants, tshirts, light shirt to put over tshirt when it got a little cooler at night.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: bring tylenol. extra tissues. none of the public toilets have toilet paper. you may want some travel wipes also. it is a big city with many pharmacies. i was able to translate that i wanted stuff for my mosquito bites by showing the lady the bump on my leg and making the mosquito sound.
Photo Equipment: small compact camera (travel light). disposable camera. (my camera broke for some reason on the way there) i was forced to buy disposable camera in china and it costs $20 when we can get them here for $5. electronics are not cheap in china.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: waterproof light gortex coat
Miscellaneous: good sneakers, you will be doing a lot of walking. cotton low cut socks.

Luggage and bags: Yes.....Beijingshi is not Beijing.
Things you can easily buy in Beijing just do not appear in the surrounding towns, so if you are heading out here do bring what you need.
Film and batteries are available, but often just local brands, and more expensive than downtown.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Walking gear and wet weather clothing are just not available in Beijingshi outside Beijing, although some stores in towns like Miyun and Changping have fake North Face coats. Get what you need in the reputable stores in Beijing or elsewhere!

Photo Equipment: Since everything goes digital and mega pixels are getting higher every 3months. What you need while you're traveling China will be one of this digital storage so that you'll not deprive from limiting your photographic urge.
If you do not have one of this, buy one when you're at Beijing. Even savvy guys like me were surprise by gadgets like this so widely available in Beijing especially at electrical and digital malls near Beijing University.

Luggage and bags: For shopping lovers, u might come home with EXTRA bagS. I went with one empty bag for shopping as i cannot keep extra bags at my small apartment.
Other people bought new bags (cheap). Some bought 2-3 bags.
Photo Equipment: buy the film in beijing. much cheaper.
