Went here a year ago to see what Tibetan food was like but was actually very disappointed. Walked in and the decor was very pretty with lots of colourful hangings on the walls and ceilings, the staff were very attentive dressed in their traditional costume and there was live music too, but apart from that, it wasn't anything special. The menu was amazing, this long pull out of a thing with lots of dishes and corresponding photos, but none of them were actually as outstanding as we were led to believe they would be!
One of the only Tibetan restaurants in Beijing, so if you fancy it, please go and check it out, maybe I just didn't choose the best dishes!
A description of a dish:
"Moral is a famous edible wild fungus. It is picked from plateau forest 3000m in altitude. It is tender, crisp, sweet and tasty. It is good for the stomach and intestines, benefiting digestion, adjusts body energy flow and dispels phlegm. It can also prevent problems caused by wind and treats cold, making a good food especially in winter."
Favorite Dish: According to the restaurant the following are true: Some are very funny!
"From the snowy plateau at the top of the mountain"
"Caised on the pollution-free peaks of Maya snow mountains"
"Precious ancient breed of semi-domesticated yak. Nationally recognised rare species"
"National standard grade A green (organic) food"
"Very rare, only one of these "white peaclon the prairie" white yak per 150,000 people"
"It is very rare and very delicious. It is best prenicum venison"
"Lamb meat of Qing Yuan is the best main course of China, the meat quality is greeness, don't ascend the fire, having no flavour of the smell of mutton!"
"White Yak were slaughtered by imam and were delievered everyday by air. The best yak ,eat should be freshly!"

The 1st western restaurant opened in beijing. all of beijing citizen call it "Lao-Mao".
it remains a lavish place to celebrate a grand event or simply enjoy a pricey dinner out on the town. The menu includes borsch, chicken kiev and filet steak casserole, among other Russian favorites. Perfect for a posh dinner out.
Excellent service and nice russian music around.

Hot pot from Sichuan! The spicy soup stock comes from Sichuan in a pre-sealed package. What else is special about this place? Kung fu noodling! Kung fu bus boys. The place is huge so while you wait they offer free shoe shine...(yep, you heard it right..shoe shine.), manicure (he he), and free internet access...only in China...
The hot pot stock is exceptional. The service super friendly. Place is packed with happy dinners every single night. Oh, there is also an enclosed children area supervised by ayi staff. They have pre-set activities for the little ones.
Oh, no one speaks English at this place. It's a strictly local joint. Have fun with the kung fu noodles...
There are six of these places throughout Beijing
Favorite Dish: The Sicuan thousand year old eggs. The hua beef, the kung fu noodles. The fish and shrimp paste balls...yummy.

It is a tiny restaurant with a bar that sits six people and three tatami rooms that sit another sixteen. Reservation necessary. The place is full of Japanese customers at any given nights. Why? Well, all the seafood are flown in from Japan daily. It is not Beijing cheap but it is much cheaper than if you would be eating this sushi at a decent restaurant in Tokyo. Service is excellent and the decor is simple and subtle. For 200RMB, you get a set dinner that include a variety of sushi, steam egg custard, crab soup, and eel rice. It is a lot to eat and an excellent deal.
Favorite Dish: If you like maguro (tuna) well you are in heaven here. They have four kinds of maguro. Really lean (deep red in color and dense in texture), marbled, fatty toro, and really fatty toro. (this fish just melts in your mouth.) The scallop and rock shrimp are also favorites.

Fusion food nothing to write home about...but the setting, the mood of the place is somehow retro subtle. Great place to come and chill, or have a nice chat with your current boy/girl friend. The fresh juices are interesting.

For those wanting a quick "Beijing Roast Duck" fix, there's a roast duck fast food restaurant along the redeveloped Qianman Main Street (Qianmen Station on Line 2) . Because of the touristy location, it is a little pricey at CNY90 for some slices of duck plus the trimmings and a small soda. It cost a total of CNY 360 for the 4 of us. But come early as it gets crowded quite fast. The next day we went to our favorite duck restaurant near the Drum Tower (see my 2008 tip) and the lunch consisting of roast duck (with the usual trimmings) and the duck bones made into soup, noodle soup, prawns with cashew nuts, rice and a big bottle of soda cost only CNY110. Just take any bus that goes to the Drum Tower (Bus 5, 82 etc.). It's on the right side facing the Drum Tower.
Favorite Dish: Duck of course!

Buffet are only available on weekend. The atmosphere typical of Japanese settings, food are well presented, serving portions are decent and of good quality. Order of carbonated drinks come canned instead of jug pours.
Favorite Dish: Particularly like the sashimis, cold soba, prawn tempura and vanilla ice-cream

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!! A mecca for vegetarians and meat lovers alike! I eat meat and so does my boyfriend, but the two girls we were with don't! But this didn't prove to be a problem whatsoever! The menu clearly states which dishes are veggie and which ones aren't, and believe it or not, I think the majority were meat free! You can sit both inside or on the big terrace outside. We chose out as it was a very warm night. The atmosphere was great, the service was impeccable and the food was magnificent! What more could you ask for?!
Favorite Dish: We had an array of dishes and shared them all, as that way we'd get to taste many different things. We had falafels, hoummous, a sour cucumber dip with warm pitta bread, cheesy filled pastries, a mouth watering salad with spices galore and a tangy vinagrette, a small but very tasty fish and some chicken wings.... And this was all topped off with cocktails and beers! Oh my goodness my mouth is getting all excited just describing the dishes...I want to go back...I have to go back...I NEED to go back!!!!

Open 07.30 - 23.00 Monday to Sunday
Breakfast served all day, Daily fresh Baked Bread, Sandwiches and Burgers, Homemade milk shakes and desserts.
I come here frequently for weekend brunch with the girls and it's a nice atmosphere. The waitresses and waiters speak good english and if you go before 11am you get a discount. A nice treat now and then to remind you of food from back home!
Update: I went there recently (May '09) and was a little disappointed. I had a salad and it was possibly the most boring salad I have ever had as it was just iceberg lettuce they used. It was a little pricey too for what I got. So going back to my original dishes, the breakfast and omelettes are pretty good and I think I'll stick to those in the future!
Favorite Dish: Great English breakfast for under 50yuan. Bottomless cups of coffee. Nice cosy atmosphere.

This is a place that I have walked past many times before but have never had the opportunity to go into, due mainly to its high prices! It is situated at the bottom of The International Trade Centre in Beijing, so is in a great location for businessmen, who are the ones with the company account!!!!
Anyway, a friend of mine recently invited me to dinner there with four other friends and I was really excited! The weather outside was atrocious...one of the worst spring days yet this year, sand blowing around in the air, trees rustling like crazy and a feeling that armageddon was about to attack!
Anyway, the restaurant was nice and cosy with great smells and a very 'real' ambiance. The carpets were traditionally Indian style, pattern and colour and the fact that the place was just full of Indian people gave it brownie points for convincing its customers that it has REAL Indian food!!! The waiter staff was friendly and were good at recommending various dishes. They dress in traditional Indian clothes and through the glass you can see the chefs working in the kitchen!
Favorite Dish: We had an array of dishes, although i cannot remember what we had. I know we had Jogan Rosh, Chicken tikka masala, naan bread and butter naan bread, delicious mango yoghurt drinks, samosas and a few other dishes, but i think no matter what you try here, its all going to taste scrummy!!!
My friend, fellow VTer Maysue was getting very snap happy and so I joined her as I thought i had to add new pages to my Beijing VT page too, so the two of us must have looked a little crazy!!! We must have caught the manager's eye as he then began giving us very special attention after that believing we were someone important! It was quite fun!!!
I must add that the manager was a very nice man, and would walk round all the tables throughout the evening asking people if they were ok etc...it was very good service, no wonder there was a queue of people waiting to eat there. His name in case you wish to eat there is M H Pastakia.
