Climb the Great Wall at Mutianyu

by gypsysoul73

The Great Wall of China is almost 4,000 miles long and like a giant dragon, it zigzags across North China from the eastern coast to the Gobi desert in Gansu. The width of the wall is only about 18 feet (much narrower than I imagined it to be) and it's height is about 25 feet. It felt incredible being there, walking on this remarkable masterpiece that stood as witness to the rise and fall of Chinese history for over 2,000 years. We went to the Mutianyu section of the wall which is about 90 kms. from Beijing and boy was I glad we revised our itinerary. Many tour operators take their groups to the more touristy Badaling section because of it's proximity to Beijing (70 kms.) and for the Ming Tombs which can be visited en route. Taking into account the advice of friends and online travelogues, we opted to forego the Tombs and the wall at Badaling for the more scenic and less crowded Mutianyu.

Hang with the locals at the Temple of Heaven

by gypsysoul73

This temple complex, which is the largest in China, reflects the ancient Chinese belief that Heaven was an ominpresent god of nature that governed everything under the sky, hence it was the venue for many sacred rituals and ceremonies to ensure good harvests. The most striking building in the complex is the circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (pictured above and below). It is built on the precise location where heaven and earth meet, as determined by feng shui masters. it is beautiful! Thousands of 100 year old cypress trees lend a serene atmosphere to the park that surrounds the temples. It is no wonder then that the park has become a favorite among the locals for recreational activities or simply to just daydream or ponder the sayings of Confucius. By the east gate there was a couple who was joyfully twirling their batons of rainbow ribbon and just beyond them was an old man in...

Skiing in Beijing

by beaverk

Well usually one does not think of Beijing = skiing. But there it is! A short expressway trip north of Beijing (around 45 minutes without traffic) and one is at the local ski resort of NANSHAN.It's a simple setup. Compare to anywhere outside of China, this is a very very small resort. bunny slopes tend to be really crowded on Sat. There are only three medium level blue runs, one black diamond run. Some areas for boarders. All in all, nothing fancy but if one goes on an off day, it is ok.We went on a sunday so it was not crowded at all. waiting time at bunny slopes is around 10 minutes. Blue runs wait time is around 5 to 10 minutes. The blue runs are short though. 2 to 3 minutes you are done. The plus side of Nan shan is its price. Cheap is the word. Also, if you are a beginner, this is the best place to learn how to skip. 200RMB for two hours of private lesson!!! That's like 25 USD for 2...

Temple of Heaven

by victorwkf

The Temple of Heaven was built in 1420 AD during the Ming Dynasty to offer sacrifice to Heaven. The northern part within the wall is semicircular symbolizing the heavens and the southern part is square symbolizing the earth. The Temple is divided by two enclosed walls into inner part and outer part. The most magnificent buildings are The Circular Mound Altar (Yuanqiutan), Imperial Vault of Heaven (Huangqiongyu) and Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest (Qiniandian) from south to north. Also, there are some additional buildings like Three Echo Stones and Echo Wall. The Circular Altar has three layered terraces with white marble. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the emperors would offer sacrifice to Heaven on the day of the Winter Solstice every year. This ceremony was to thank Heaven and hope everything would be good in the future. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest is a big palace with...

Dong Wu Silk Museum & Store

by victorwkf

This silk museum and store is worth visiting if you want to buy silk products. They will show you the various types of silk and how silk is made from the silk cocoon to the fabrics. There will be a huge store selling silk products, and this is worth checking out because the quality is good and the price is reasonable considering the quality of the products. One famous item here is the silk blankets which are good at keeping warm and I bought a few of these home. The blanket cost about RMB$380 to $500 depending on the thickness.

Other attractions in Beijing

by victorwkf

Besides the limited attractions in Beijing which I have visited, the following are other major attractions which you should visit when you are in Beijing. I will certainly cover them when I have the chance to visit Beijing again.- Forbidden City (a huge city where the former emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasty lived)- Summer Palace (where former emperors spent their holidays)- Ruins of Yuanmingyuan (near to Summer Palace, this was a big resort for the emperors until it was burnt down and looted by Westerners)- Visit the various parks in Beijing (e.g. Beihai Park, Chaoyang Park, Longtan Park)- Lugouqiao, aka Marco Polo Bridge (this is where the war between Japan and China was triggered during World War 2)- Olympic village (this is still under construction, but is massive as expected)- Beijing Zoo and Beijing Planetarium- Temple of the Sun, aka Ritan Park and Temple of the Moon, aka...

Tiananmen Square

by victorwkf

Located at the center of Beijing City is Tiananmen Square, where you can visit Tiananmen Tower, Monument to the People's Heroes, Great Hall of the People, Mao Zedong Memorial Hall and see the national flag raising ceremony. Thousands of people come to the Square every day. It is the must place to visit in Beijing City.At the north end of the Square is Tiananmen Tower. Initially built in 1417 during the Ming Dynasty, the Square was the front door of the Forbidden City. The granite Monument to the People's Heroes is just at the center of the Tiananmen Square. Built in 1952, it is the largest monument in China's history. ' The People's Heroes are Immortal' written by Chairman Mao is engraved on the monument. West of the Square is the Great Hall of the People. This building, erected in 1959, is the site of the China National People's Congress meetings. Twelve marble posts are infront of the...

Wangfujing Area (Part 1)

by victorwkf

The Wangfujing area located near to Tiananmen Square is the famous shopping and eating area in the centre of Beijing. This area is full of shops selling many items and lots of eateries from all over China (e.g. mutton sticks from Western China, Peking Duck and dishes from many provinces in China). This place is also very crowded especially during night-time and weekends. Some of the best bookstores in Beijing are also located here. Wangfujing is a must visit when you are in Beijing, but be very careful of your belongings as there are many pickpockets around.

Peking Duck and Pecking Opera

by victorwkf

When you are in Beijing, you must try the famous Peking Duck dish. This dish is essentially roasted duck skin with little bit of meat wrapped in thin pan-cake with sauce and vegetables. If the Peking Duck is good, you can see that the duck is roasted evenly and there should not be any over-roasted portions (e.g. charred). The best Peking Duck restaurant in Beijing must be Quan Ju Die (see address below) which you must call up and make reservations as the queue is long as expected. I did not eat at Quan Ju De but managed to try the Peking Duck at the restaurant at my hotel (Guangxi Hotel) instead and it was very tasty. Another thing not to be missed in Beijing is to watch the famous Peking Opera. This is a lively opera performance by people dressed in traditional colourful costumes and have their faces painted. You may not understand it but the experience is really worth it :)

Beijing is Big!

by victorwkf

Beijing is a very big city so beware! When you look at the map, the city is organised in a spider-web shaped with the streets lining up in a ring fashion. The famous Forbidden City and Tiananment Square forms the centre of the city, which then expands outwards. There are 4 major ring roads in Beijing. Also, you should look at the scale careful when you look at the Beijing map. The actual distances are very far even though they appear to be near on the map!
