Rise and shine

by irvbur

After a brief sleep the morning after our arrival, we used the early morning jet lag to go to Bahia Park. Any public place where people do Tai Chi the first thing in the morning is a definate place to visit. It's amazing to see the differenct types of excercise that are done so early in the day. Group singing, tai chi in groups or individually, and stretching excercises are just a few of them. I encourage anyone who can possibly check it out, to do so .

Anything icy this way come...hehe

by beaverk

Houhai during the winter months is a fun fun place. For very little money, we are talking about from five rmb for ice skates to ten rmb for ice bicycle (60 minutes), you and your friends can have a blast and some exercise on the lake itself...and as everything else in Beijing, you will find the Chinese using the ice lake for multi-purposes. Cotton candy is sold on ice. Beijing glazed fruits on sticks sold on ice. Children toys sold on ice. And of course, ice bicycle, ice sleds, ice skates are all up for rental. For those who have cold feet, I think this is the best way to get some circulation going in the cold winter months.

Movie theater experience + foot massage!!!

by beaverk

Only in China can one go to a foot massage place, a very upscale one at that, get free food (southern style at this place) and sit in your own private twenty four people sitting surround sound blasting large screen (try big!!!) movie theater, watch a movie and get a foot massage at the same time!!! This place also has free internet and the usual body massage, plus ear cleaning, etc...Usually we would book the entire screening room (six min...) and have a private screening while we are getting steam, regular, or fragrance foot massage!!! And munch on fresh juice, noodles, dumplings all at the same time...I know..it's decadent...hehe...all for one price. Place is open until 2AM daily. The staff speaks some English.

Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, foot &body massage

by beaverk

Ok, we've all been to the foot massage and body massage place. But what happens when you want to have a decent party? Well, the ORIENTAL TAI PAN at the Winterless location has a huge room equipped with yes...a jacuzzi (fitting four comfortably) dry and wet sauna, a shower, four foot massage seats, and two body massage beds. For a min 500 RMB spending...well if you have at least four people it's easy. You can have the room all night long. Eat as much as you want (included in price), get a massage, and soak in the hot tub!!!

Great Wall of China

by Joy1912

Just have to climb up the wall : ) For those who have not been exercising much or have weak knees, you can just stop after the first two "towers".Railings are installed at the side and in the middle of the steps for the more challenging parts.

Flea Market

by muddybok

I was wondering around Beijing streets and came across some of these flea markets. The goods that were selling by these streets vendors are somewhat similar from store to another. Of course other part of Beijing streets will be specialised in some other type of merchandise. These flea market vendors are not happy when I take photos as to how they carry out their transaction. Some even shouted at me and franticly wave their hands as protest of being filmed. These illegal flea markets will be dispersed in less than 2 minutes if the city authorities are around the corner.

The sights around Beijing

by mke1963

The actual city of Beijing covers only a very small area of Beijing municipality, which stretches across the plain and up into the surrounding mountains. Usually it is not possible to see the mountains because of the ciy's infamous smog pollution, but they are there....honest! To the north and the west, this city is enveloped by the craggy mountains of what becomes the Taihangshan, agreat range of mountains behind which Shanxi and Inner Mongolia lie.The Great Wall and the Western Ming Tombs all lie in the Beijing "suburbs", as Chinese authorities love to call this great hinterland, but the area is also home to many great temples, fortresses and some pleasant rural communities. With so many of the world's great cultural sights lying in and around the city it is easy to overlook the lesser or ordinary places, but there are many places to find and explore that capture the "real China"...

Restaurants

by jefferson66

So many restaurants in Beijing....so little time. Food and great places to eat are plentiful and cheap. Everywhere you go, there are mom n pop type restaurants with amazing food, and great service. Kung Pao is a popular dish, as are dumplings. Portions are huge, but it's rude to finish a plate clean. Many restaurants are family style - which means you order a bunch of things for the table, and everybody shares, usually with a large lazy susan. Just take a few chopstick-fulls, enjoy, then spin! Repeat often. The food is also amazingly cheap. Your average meal for one will cost maybe $5 - and I'm talking a four course meal, plus drink (usually tea, unless you learn how to ask for a cold soda). I think our most expensive meal, at the Peking Duck restaurant (you have to go to one - it's an experience) was about $75, and that's for 5 people for a gigantic meal. And that includes wheeling a...

The Great Wall

by jefferson66

Mind blowing how long it is. There are many Great Wall spots, but Badaling is the most popular, and most tourist friendly. In many other locations, the Great Wall is not repaired and walkable. The Wall in Badaling is kept up well, and full of vendors selling their wares.Once you get past the first section, if you're reasonably in shape and have your walking shoes on, you can get some serious excercise. Some of the sections seem like they are straight up, and some have stairs while some don't. The vertical parts can really take your breath away (literally!!), but it's worth it to get up the wall a bit and see some spectacular views. There are plenty of souvenier vendors (even some at the top - I have NO idea how they got their carts up there!!!), and the stuff is dirt cheap, make sure you get the "I climbed the great wall" mini-plaque with your name engraved. I think it cost me $3, and it...

Forbidden City

by jefferson66

You can't go to China and not see two things...the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. It's amazing the scope of the city, and how much labor it took to build. It's beautiful, and fascinating. Make sure you take the audio tour, and take your time. Some days are crowded, but the information on the audio tour is fascinating.
