Baidicheng Things to Do

Almost opposite Baidicheng, on the south bank of the river is one of the first great natural features of the Three Gorges: the great Waterwashed Wall of Qutang Gorge.
It is a vast limestone wall, maybe four hundred metres high, beautifully stained by aeons of water dripping down the face.
For the Chinese of old, this was a vast canvas for carving inscriptions - this is a Chinese past-time, get used to it!
Calligraphic works of art (or ancient grafitti, as you may call it) has been inscribed on the wall.Much f it has now been lost to the rising waters of the dam. One of the most famous poems carved here was the 980 word 'Ode to the Resurgence of the Song' from the later Song Dynasty...a rather wishful ode in the circumstances!
The wall in the morning mist is simply unforgettable: it is simply awesome.
