    Antique Market

by tremendopunto Updated Aug 31, 2005

The ANTIQUE MARKET is situated in Yuzhong District, downtown Chongqing, close to Jiefang Bei. From JiefangBei walk down the MinquanLu to the round about or rotary traffic meeting the XinhuaLu (10 minutes walking). From this traffic circle you take the second street on the right side, which is called ZhongxingLu and heads down to the ChangJiang
Walk down this road where the Tea House is situated (my first tip) for maybe 5 more minutes. On the left side you will see a big building, which you can not miss because of many busy people. It is not spectacular from the outside but there are at least three floors full of traders and hundreds of little stalls. From the street you would enter the third one which offers electronic stuff, but I was not looking for a tv or washing machine. Walk around the building or down the stairs to the first two storeys where you can only find antiques! And by the way they where looking at me you could tell that this is a real Chinese market where they dont see foreigners very often (even in Chongqing). They offer everything from little things to complete old traditional Chinese beds and wooden statues (looked like old temple statues) of more than 3 meters height. You name it, they got it!
This market is open everyday, but dont come too late. If you come by on the weekend there is also some market outside offering all kinds of goods.

    Have a good price hunting!

What to pay: Never forget hard bargaining! Everything is negtiatable in China!

  • In the People's Hall: Interesting art shop

    by mke1963 Written Nov 6, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Usually, art shops in tourist areas are simply appalling, selling the worst kind of rubbish.
However, the art gallery above the entrance to the People's Hall is really very good, with a lot of local contemporary art, some good small pieces of sculpture and a lot of so-so calligraphy.
The staff are relaxed and not pushy at all, and seem to be well informed.

What to buy: Some of the rural folk art is cheerful. Not as good as you might find in Shaanxi, but a lot cheaper and it has its own Sichuan style.

What to pay: Upwards of RMB500

Chongqing has a large pedestrian shopping area centre around Jiefangbei which is the central business district of the urban city and the centre of economic development of Chongqing Municipality. The Jiefangbei commercial Pedestrian Street centres this well-known shopping area. Clusters of modern shopping malls and exclusive shops line the roadsides. Banks, theatres, KTV clubs, bookstores, hotels, bars and pubs are also quite easy to find. Some of the main buildings worth seeing include Chongqing Department Store, New Century Department Store, Commercial Mansion, Friendship Shopping Centre, Carrefour Supermarket and New Oriental Women Plaza.

The best place to go for shopping in Chongqing is around Jiefangbei in Yuzhong District! You can find everything possible, even an Armani shop, if you like to burn some cash :-)
