The best way to visit the beautiful Hakka villages is to rent a taxi or a motorcycle for the day.
After half an hour of bargaining, we rent a taxi for 400 yuan. If we have used another 30m minutes it could have been cheaper.

There are direct buses to/from Xiamen. Not large coaches, but comfortable enough for a 5-6 hours trip.
If you come through Longyang, just go to the Tu Lou counter at the bus station. You will probably be helped by some touts - not aggressive - who will propose you accomodation in Hongkeng.
The morning bus to Xiamen leaves at around 8 am.

Option 2 : Take a direct bus from Xiamen bus terminal. There is only one bus trip a day. I took the bus on my return instead.
The bus leaves for Hongkeng in the evening, and pick up passengers on the return from Hongkeng and Chengqilou.
It a 5-hour journey and the bus fare was RMB 25 one way, but be warn, it’s was a real boneshaker and no air-conditioning. I had a blueblack bruise on my forehead to prove it. I would not consider taking this bus route although it is the shortest but it is not comfortable. The passengers smoke like chimneys, the seats are not comfortable and when they had a toilet stop, it was in the middle of nowhere, and there wasn't any toilet. You simply do it in the bushes. Furthermore, going to Hongkeng, mean taking the night bus. You will miss out on some interesting scenery along the way.
Option 3: Take an hourly a-con bus to Longyan. 2-3 hours trip. Cost RMB58. From Longyan, we took a cab to Fuyulu, Hongkeng to stay for a night in the Tulou. The cab costs RMB 150, but I believed it would have been cheaper if you bargain hard enough.
Alternatively, there is an hourly bus to Hongkeng, I believe, but didn't bother to take the time to find out when I made my brief stop at Longyan for lunch. If you have time, it may be a good overnight stop to explore an interior township of Fujian.
Option 4: Book a minibus from Xiamen to cover the entire trip. I've inquired several tour agents in Xiamen, a couple had quoted over RMB1,000. On my return, I met a minibus driver who was fetching 3 French nationals to Hongkeng, said that he charged RMB550 for providing a 2-day transport service. He gave his name as Mr Su and his contact as 8292439 (0592). I should add that he was not your registered tour agent, but was moonlighting while running an electrical hardware shop in Xiamen. The advantage of having your own transportation is that you will be able to cover more grounds on a given time frame, but going local and mingling with them also makes the journey more interesting
