This book (ISBN 7561516045) is simply the best English language city guide book I have seen in China, and the author deserves a lot of credit for putting it all together.
This is not a 'picture of sunset' book, but a warts-and-all guide that tels you a lot about evrything....stuffed full of anecdotes, snippets, gossip, rumour and legends.
Written by Dr. Bill Brown, a university professor at a local university, the book is all you need in and around Xiamen.
Personally, I find his need to use cliches a bit wearing after a few pages, and it is defintely 'home style' writing, but I am probably being churlish: this is a great book, and nothing else comes close to it.
The book is available in Xiamen (I have never seen it in Beijing bookshops) but if you can get it before you arrive, it will help you get so much more out of your trip.

Xiamen is not the place for shopping at all.There are some soveniour shops on the island where you can buy many kinds of shells if you are intrested
Zhongsan Lu is the main shopping street in the city which is full of mid and up range stores and some brands stores not only Chinese but also from Europe and Hong Kong.There you can buy all kinds of clothes , shoes , bags , backpacks etc..
If you re looking for some cheaper bulk staff i would recommend you to have look at the side roads around Zhongsan Lu on your left when you turn your back to the sea(north)
you will find many small shops , street stalls and outlet shops there
The other cheap shopping area is the carrefour and around
the place doesn't get as busy as Zhongsan Lu and there are less foreigners there so the street stalls sell many goods for reasonable prices
when i get to Xiamen i flied from Thailand and Xiamen was much colder than Thailand so i needed some warm clothes and a pair of shoes.I ve paid about 15 usd for a pair of shoes and a woolen sweater.I paid 10 usd for a raincoat.By the way my backpack was in a bad condition and i ve bought a new 50lt one for 15 usd which is not a brand name but it is in average quality
It is surely still lot cheaper than back home but if your trip covers some other cities of China or particularly Hong Kong i would recommend you to save your shopping for the other places Theme: OtherAddress: Zhongsan LuDirections: The walking street just ahead of the heping Ferry terminal

Zhong Shan road is the commercial center of Xia Men, famous brands covering boths sides of the road.
There are no any difference with those shopping centers in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzheng, etc.
