Probably the easiest way to Xiamen is by air. I flew into and out of the city three times from Guangzhou, Shenzen and Shanghai.

The airport is officially called "Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport". Airport code: XMN. It is the homebase for Xiamen Airlines.

There are road and rail connections but Xiamen is surrounded by mountains. Probably the sea was the best access in the old days when it was called "Amoy" and was the port that many Chinese from Fujian emigrated to Southeast Asia.

The beautiful Xiamen international airport is located by the sea in northeast of Xiamen island.

Right near the airport are many multi-national corporation factories like Dell, Canon. The airport is about 10km from downtown.

taxis are plenty but not easy to find in the rush hours (5-7pm). 8 yuan starting price and the first 3km is for free
there are ferries from the Heping Ferry Terminal to Gulangyu until midnight.Free from Xiamen to Gulangyu and 8 yuan from Gulang yu to Xiamen

  • Don't forget to write down the destination in Chinese and give it to bus driver. Bus cost 1 or 2 yuan depend on destination (has no change). No english information in the bus.

From Xiamen airport to Xiamen University

  • It is quite far from Xiamen Airport to Xiamen University. There is no direct bus to the univeristy. For the first comer without Chinese language at all (like me), taxi is the best choice. The price is fair, first 3 km is 8 yuan, then 1 yuan/km.
But remember, the driver really cannot understand english, even university, he didn't know what it is. Lucky I can write a little Japanese kanji, so I write down the University in kanji, and another lucky that kanji university in japanese is same with that in chinese.

Don't forget to write down the destination in chinese character before you get the taxi.
From airport to university cost 50-60 yuan.

    Xiamen Airport

  • Xiamen Airport is one of those older airports, like Shanghai's Hongqiao. However, is it a coincidence that both these ariports seem to be so much easier to use than the more modern terminals (Beijing, Pudong, Guangzhou and even Xian)?
The curious concrete building, looking like a partially completed Meccano set, is compact but well laid out. Everything seemed to be where it is supposed to be, and I didn't feel I was walking halfway round the planet to find an ATM or a cafe or information like you do at so many Chinese airports. Plenty of shops, but still all of the 'mainly empty glass cabinet' variety.
China's airport planners have a lot to learn from places like Xiamen and Hongqiao!

Note that the local agent for Dragonair at Xiamen Airport is China Southern.

Xiamen Airport has a (relatively) good web site for more information (URL below)

This is the cheapest way to move around a city without a subway system. Starting price is RMB1 and practically the system connects from downtown to suburb. Xiamen is not a real big city, but it still take quite a long time if you really want to shuffle around the place. Bus service is GOOD comparing to those in Shenzhen. Driver is nice, but there is not ticketing auntie in the bus selling ticket. Please prepare for your coin.
