wild life

by tompt

On the graslands you can see many small rodents crossing the fields. It are marmots. Marmots live in Europe, Asia and North-America. Marmots dig holes in the sometimes hard ground, they live mostly in colonies and can be found on great heights. They eat gras or other plant parts. In the winter they hibernate.

warm clothing........no matter how warm it is

by tompt

The people living on the graslands of Amdo, mostly nomads wear warm clothing. This picture was taken on a relatively warm day (around 20?C)The long sleeves in their coats seem to be a trademark, but it looked very uncomfortable to us.

men are just resting everywhere

by tompt

Along the road we encountered some group of men. They came their with their motorbikes. But what were they doing there? Just resting on corners? We never found out, as our chinese and tibetan is as poor as their english........

roadworks are infinite

by tompt

The roads (mostly mudpaths) through the grasslands of the Amdo area, need constant maintenance. Especially during the rainy season work is needed here. As these roads are long and there is no town in sight the workers do have their own tentcamps.

Temporary rivers

by victorwkf

I was very lucky when I was in Gansu, because I get to see water flowing in some of the rivers which are dried most of the year. Apparently there was some rainfall for the past few days, and it resulted in this rare scene as shown in the photograph.

Local food

by victorwkf

There are many types of interesting food which I have tried while in Gansu, including the spicy mutton sticks which are very good on a cold night in the desert. Another interesting food is their specially made sliced noodles which can be seen on the photograph.

Growing crops

by victorwkf

Despite its dryness, you can see crops being grown in Gansu, such as wheat. This goes to show that it is still possible to have some agriculture even in a dry place.

Flowers

by victorwkf

Having said so much that Gansu is a dry and arid province in general, however you can find beautiful flowers and flora in places near to water supplies such as the river.

Very dry and arid land

by victorwkf

Gansu is a very dry and arid province, and one of the poorest in China. This can be seen clearly during the train journey across the province.
