Lanzou's most famous food is lamien. It means spicy noodles and is the original word from which Japanese "ramen" comes from. These noodles are hand made in front of you with lots of pulling and slapping, of the noodles, onto a table. Then they are boiled and served with various toppings of your choice. Beef or mutton are your meat choices. You can also get them with a fried egg or some pickled veggies.

I like the noodles with pickled veggies and a fried egg. A flatbread on the side for dipping in the soup is also highly recommended.

The best eating in Lanzhou is at the night markets - there are street vendors selling all kinds of local delicacies (including pig snouts and tails but also spicy potato slices on skewers and meat kebabs that are fantastic). This is a great place to get some of the muslim noodles (aka pull noodles - tiny doughy noodles in a spicy sauce with meat; one of my favorite dishes in China).

Again this a Muslim Restaurant selling famous Lanzhou noodles and etc. Inside this photo you can see 3 Muslim women with head scalf. Oh yes, the noodle cost RMB5
Our roadside dinner was really something excellent by a Muslim cook located somewhere nearby the Railway station, that street is extremely crowded at night.

Lanzhou Noodle

Maybe Gansu has many nice restaurants, but I'd like to have dinner in small snack bar because at that time you can be close with the local people and contact with the local culture.

Noodle is the most famous food there. I guarantee it will be the first time you learn flour is so magic. The types of noodle are beyong your imagination.

I haven't reviewed any restaurants in Lanzhou, not because I haven't eaten in any, but because I have eaten in so many of them. After 30 or so visits to Lanzhou in the last four years, I have eaten all over the city and the food has always been excellent. Lanzhou really is very well-known for its cuisine, and despite its somewhat less than picturesque surroundings, Lanzhou has attracted visitors because of its food.

The most famous food in Lanzhou is the hand-pulled noodles, which are now listed as intangible heritage by the provincial government. There are many restaurants that serve them up, and I will get around to reviewing arguably the two best restaurants when I can.

One of them is now in the Legend (or Feitian) Hotel, one of the top hotels in Lanzhou, the other about 500 metres away.

Only three kinds of food be selled by this restaurant . Just these three food fascinating enough to attract all citizen loved to go to eat. Even not holiday, even not meal time, there is always a long queue that people are waiting for eating. The storefront is so small that wherever whenever there is no seat empty. Although it is no beautiful decoration, no clean and big storefront, no music and no other luxuriant things, however, indeed, only in this small restaurant the food is really traditional and local.

Lanzhou La Mien. Hand pulled noodles if I were to direct translate and they taste great with local gravy, on the spicy side though. The local consume a lot of chili oil. If you are not used to eat, when ordering a bowl of beef noodle especially, tell them less or no oil. If not, the top of the bowl is covered with chili oil.

In the picture, my favourite dish is the beef rolled up in egg. Can't have enough of it haha ... The rest of the plates on the table are Noodles, celery in gravy, chili + pepper chicken, goats paw in chili oil, cold cow liver, cold duck and lamb.
