Perhaps the best and most popular way to tranverse the huge and isolated regions of Western China, including Gansu, is by train. You can start in Xian city and travel all the way West to Urumqi in Xinjiang province or the other way around. Sometimes the train will stop for a few hours if the wind speed is too high. During my train journey, it stopped for about 3 hours beacuse of the wind. More photos of my train journey from Xinjiang province to Gansu province of China are at the travelogue section of this VT page.

Travelling between Lanzhou and Xiahe, our private tourbus seemed to be in a hurry. We were overtaking everything, but then we saw all other busses driving in the same way.
Untill this one blind corner on a mountainroad, the bus sounded his horn (normally done when overtaking) and then just went to the left lane. From the other side was a local bus approaching......... both busses met and the result can be seen in the picture. This is what the driverseat looked like. The bus was totalled and we were black and blue and covered with cuts and bruises, but nothing broken and very much alive !!
