    Lanzhou Off The Beaten Path

The Bingling Si Grottoes can be visited in summer. I am told that access is only by water, and that the water in the Yellow River is too low most of the year. I visited the second week of August. Skies were clear and the air was mild. No humidity. This is an extraordinary trip. I was expecting this to be a highlight of my trip to China, but I was...

    Lanzhou Tourist Traps

Lanzhou is a very polluted city. It is also very large. Because it has no subway or effective mass transit system, getting around is a major pain. Many people fly into Lanzhou to start trips for Silk Road sites, to visit Bingling Si, Xiahe, Labrang Monastery, Xining. But staying in Lanzhou is a pain and not very nice. • Ingalotta's Profile Photo

by Ingalotta Updated Nov 1, 2004

There's just one reason to go to Liujiaxia and that's to see the grottoes of Bin Ling Si. To get there you have to take a boat along the Yellow River. You only can go there three months a year, otherwise, the river is either too low or too high to reach the place. Bing Ling SI is famous for it's caves. If you have seen other caves of this kind before (you can't compare them with the Magao Grottoes in Dunhuang), the caves are perhaps a bit dissapointing, but the landscape around is just great. So if you aren't a expert of grottoe, it should be enough to pay the 30 Yuan for the grottoes on the ground floor. If you want to see more of the grottoes, you have to pay more, up to 300 Yuan.

I can definitly recommend a trip to Bing Ling Si. Consider taking a speed boat instead of the usual one, as even the speed boat takes about one hour to get there.
