The insurance they might say you can't get on the bus without in Gansu, particularly Lanzhou and Linxia, and occasionally Tianshui, is a complete scam. If you buy it, you are essentially aggreeing *not* to sue if something happens to you on the road. Best bet - don't buy tickets at the window. Just find the bus you need and get on it. They will ask for your ticket, give them the money and they'll go buy one for you.
Traffic is very dangerous here. Drivers are acting like the road is theirs and no one else can drive there.We had a buscrash and never had one quiet moment after that. the result of our bus overtaking in a blind corner can be seen in the picture. We were attacked by dogs while walking in grasslands near Xiahe. Lonely Planet advised throwing stones - this worked! Local people were very concerned and sympathetic.
The nomads always travel with dogs. These dogs guard the tent and the herd of the nomads. Don't come too close to either of it or the dogs will attack and bite !
