Ok, I encourage taxi than other transport in Dongguan as it is reasonably cheap and safer.
Its is better to always ask the driver to go by meter (unless you know the place well and know roughly the fares to get to the place). In fact alot cab drivers go by meter within the city (unless you really look like a carrot).
The fare starts from RMB7.00 upon boarding and jump RMB1.00 every say 5 lamposts. A rough guide would be: 8 mins smooth drive costs RMB13-15.00 (less than USD2.00).
Overall, it is convenient (you can easily get a cab on the road); safer and reasonably cheap.
And my personal preference: Take the green cab instead the red ones. Green cabs are more spacious and they usually maintain their vehicle. ^.^
