During harvest time in the lychee orchards, the People's Armed Forces department of Gaozhou City in Guangdong Province organizes "militia fruit protection squads" in 18 surrounding villages (including Genzi).
These armed units ensure that bandits and foreign tourists do not pick the lychees and steal fruit from the ancient imperial orchards.
WARNING: The Genzi lychee militia is the most elite unit in Guangdong province, please do not believe that you can outrun or outsmart this highly trained fighting force. You are welcome to photograph lychee trees, but don't even think about trying to pick a free sample!
