A teng

While hiking around Xiqiao Shan, you will find many of these beautifully designed small Chinese pavilions called tengs... They are a great place to stop and relax, escape the heat on a sunny day or escape the rain on a stormy day... We came across this one while investigating a crumbly old staircase that went off in an unknown direction, leading us to a high secluded area just off the main path... Don't you think it's the perfect clandestine hideaway for lovers to share some romantic moments together...?

Here is Xiujuan (VT member xingfa) posing alongside yet another amazing sideways growing tree...! Take a close look -- this is a different tree than the one in the tip above... Xiujuan and I had lots of fun and excitement exploring nature together at Xiqiao Shan...!

While following a long staircase down to one of the waterfalls, we came across this very unusual sideways growing tree...! It sticks right out of the side of the ground as you pass by, defying the very laws of gravity itself...! But if you think one sideways growing tree is amazing...

This humonguous statue of Guan Yin was built in the 1990's when Xiqiao was first officially transformed into a tourist zone, but the legend of Guan Yin is a very ancient one... Actually, Guan Yin is really the Chinese version of the Indian bodhisattva Avalokitesvara... According to the Lotus Sutra, this being can assume any form required in order to fulfill the mission of relieving suffering so it can be either male or female. In China, Guan Yin is usually portrayed as a woman, just as she appears in the famous Chinese classic saga "Journey to the West".

Big Guan Yin

Apart from the gorgeous natural wonders, Xiqiao Shan's primary tourist attraction is a gigantic statue of Guan Yin, reminiscent of Hong Kong's famous Lantau Island Big Buddha. Sitting atop one of the highest points of Xiqiao Shan, Big Guan Yin is bronze plated and surrounded by a moat...

The main attractions of Xiqiao Shan include many caves, springs and waterfalls as well as small lakes. There are also very old small villages on the hill that can be visited and a modern hotel near the top if you want to do an overnighter or longer stay... In this photo, you can make out the top part of a waterfall off in the distance...

Xiqiao Shan is a massive craggy hill above the town of Xiqiao, located about 68 kilometers southwest of Guangzhou and can be easily visited as a day trip from GZ. There are great views from the top of the hill, as you can see in the photo shown here...
