  • The weather is very very humid and hot in summer here. You need to always take napkins with you and water to drink since you sweat that much.

Since there are so many different kinds of sea food here. You should be careful of stomach problem if you are not to used to sea food. Take some medicine with you in case for stomach problem.

Summer Survival Kit, Mozzie Repellent & Umbrella

  • For summer time in GZ (May to July), wearing jeans will be a torture. Most likely it'll be soaked with sweat and you'll faint from heatstroke. Wear light, light, light. Bermudas and short tees can bring you almost anywhere since locals here are quite casual in their outfit. Can choose to wear sandals or any open toes shoes.

For ladies, one thing for sure, an umbrella is a must bring item. I used to think bringing an umbrella on a sunny day is too feminine for me. Not until i come to GZ, under 36 degrees hot sun and cloudless sky, the umbrella is a godsend. You will also see many guys carry umbrella here too, simply because the weather here is just too hot in summer.

With constructions everywhere in GZ, there's lots and lots of mozzies in summer. My friends and i got attacked on a daily basis during the summer time. Hence, grab everything you can find on mosquito repellent, gel form, spray form, patch form, incense repellent, on electric ones etc etc and prepare for the mozzie war!

  • If you are doing preaching here, you must be careful since the Chinese government doesn't allow foreigners to do so. So you need to do it 'underground' and keep your bible and spiritual things in bag and with cover. Don't just put them on the table in the hotel while you are away.

When in China BYOP bring your own paper

  • June - Be sure to bring rain gear this time of the year.

Beware of off brand batteries in China because they can leak! Be sure to remove them after your trip. Better yet, bring your own rechargeable NiMh and save $$ since these batteries last longer than many alkalines and you'll always have some on hand. Be sure the charger you use can handle both 120vac and 240vac. Note that no adapter is needed for using USA "two prong" plugs in China outlets. The grounded "Three prong" outlets will need an adapter unless you decide to snip off that 3rd prong. An adapter will be needed for both 2 & 3 prong plugs in Hong Kong because their outlets are different than those in China. Also an adapter will be needed for any HK 220-240 vac plug to be used in China (or China plug used in HK) even though they are both the same voltage 220-240 vac because they are very different (british influence?).

Bring your own tissues and napkins for both bathrooms and restaurants and even some hotels. They either are of very poor quality or do not exist. Beware - the package of napkins the restaurants leave on your table aren't free! They will charge you for each one of them. $2 RMB or more.

    first aid kit

  • The best thing I did was pack a good first aid kit for myself. including some type of disinfectant for all those mosquito bites, pain relievers, eye drops (pollution is terrible), anti-bacterial hand wipes & antibacterial soap, also anti-bacterial gel as the water has parasites (depending on where you go & sensitivity) and you may break out with rashes. Go to a herbalist for other ailments such as a cough or cold. I took concentrated tea tree oil, lavendar, eucalyptus, small enough to carry and easy to use, (available at aromatherapy stores) and cotton balls which is good for most cuts, colds, warts, etc. can use in a variety of ways, apply on the skin, breathing in over a bowl of hot water, put in a spray bottle to freshen the room but most importantly spraying the bedding, and to mist yourself to cool off and keep respiratory germs at bay. Did not see any pump bottles, bring a small one of your own, I use an old lens cleaner bottle.

Anything you forget you can buy here!!! The Guangzhou Walmart!!

When this store was first built some rather large blunders were made. 1st, they shipped the building over, but when it got there, it seemed that none of the Guangzhou construction companies knew what to do with it. So Walmart had to ship over an Construction crew to help with the assembly. Then when they were stocking the store, it didn't seem to occur to them that the items labels needed to be in Chinese, not English....When they finally figured out that this was contributing to the low sales, they made the change...

  • It's hot, dress light.

Tough to buy a camera here. Mostly 220V, although the good hotels have converters.

Buy a GSM cell phone and get a local sim chip. It will be a couple hundred dollars, but if you are stranded in the middle of no where and dont speak the local dialect, you will be happy you have it.

  • It's very hot and humid during August and subject to sudden rain showers. I recommend bringing an umbrella or rain jacket as well as clothing made from quick-drying fabrics like Microfiber or CoolMax.

    Unbelievalbe humidity...

  • Bring only breathable fabrics. Humidity is so intense, you don't want sweat more than what you are already. I wore only 100% cotton everything. Clothes are cheap and most is for the the climate of China, but their sizes are very, SMALL, so bring your own shorts, etc., unless you are tiny. You will ruin your shoes with all the rain, buy them there, they are very cheap and you can get everything! If you are hiking bring your own hiking boots, nothing beats comfort & these are not easy to find. I did not see any for sale! I took over 1 good comfortable walking shoes that I was ready to part with incase of rain and went through 2 pairs of runners, 4 pairs of flip flops that I purchased there. My own reliable shoes I wore over came back home for garden use only.
