R & Y Wine Shop

R & Y Wine Shop is the premier outlet in Shamian Dao for all of your oenological needs... They stock mostly various French vintages and when I asked if they had any Italian they showed me the one single bottle of Italian wine they had... They also have a decent selection of other spirits that you would find in Western countries such as Bailey's Irish Cream, and at prices fairly comparable to what you would pay in the West...!

Dried Snake and Starfish

Qingping Shichang, called in English the "Peaceful Market" is the product of Deng Xiaoping's infamous capitalist-style economic reforms of the late 1970's, and one of the first private markets to flourish in the People's Republic... This market is well known for the vast array of bizarre (to a westerner) food items which are on sale...

Qingping Shichang has many many shops, selling lots of strange foods such as the previously shown dried snakes and starfish, gigantic black mushrooms, dried seahorses, and various insects such as the thousands shown in the photo here, spread out along the ground... I took a close look and they were some kind of black winged insect I could not identify... And often you'll see men carrying heavy loads on their shoulders like the guy in the photo...

The famous American convenience store, 7-11, has an extensive presence in Guangdong Province, but their prices are even cheaper than in the United States... For example, a can of Fanta costs only about USD .30...! Easy to buy snack foods and cold drinks as well as other items of daily need...

Winding maze of shops selling jade, precious stones, and antiques.

What to buy: Antiques! There are lots of wooden statues, masks, puppets, and carved bed panels. Some of the china is good too. A few of the things might even be real!

What to pay: Try to pay alot less than what they ask. If you think its real the boss probably does too. Buy what you like then you want be disaoppointed if its fake or not!

In Finland people use 2-3 kinds of rice. More advance people might have 5-6 kinds but here, oh dear, how would I know which one to pick?

No, those fish are not for eating, those are for the aquarium. China and the region are very rich in beautiful fish and they are very cheap of course.
