The largest park in Guangzhou carries this tribute to the Guangzhou creation myth. Legend states five celestial beings riding into the city on five rams carrying sheaves of rice. Blessing the land, the rams turned to stone once the celestials had left. Guangzhou is sometimes referred to by several popular nicknames bought on by this tale.

Entering Yuexiu Park (越秀公园) yuè-xiù-gōng-yuán, I arrived via Guangzhou Railway Station Metro Line 2 and 5 and followed my nose but you can also take Line 2 to Yuexiu Park. The park has pleasant gardens, seasonal flowers particularly this Autumn and is a well kept spot with a large lake on the side that is closer to the train station.

Harder it was to actually find the monument. It was first on our itinerary but we had to be guided up the hill by a wonderful old man who humoured us with a broken conversation in a mix of Cantonese and Mandarin. As usual the elderly people of China were wonderful and captivating as they gathered in seated areas to discuss the day's goings on. Plenty of people out exercising and many tourists gathered at the top of the hill to see and photograph the statue.

Five Rams Sculpture
1 more image

The sculpture of five rams is the symbol of Guangzhou. It is located in Yuexiu Park, the largest urban parkland in China. Legend has it that five immortal beings wearing robes of five colours came to Guangzhou on the backs of rams. Each being carried rice and gave it to the people as a sign that Guangzhou would be free of famine. A sculpture was erected in Yuexiu park in 1959 to pay tribute to this story, and to the origins of the name Guangzhou

Guangzhou (Canton) is also known as "Yangcheng" (City of Goats). This landmark sculpture is located in Yuexiu Park. A photo opportunity to prove that you have been to Guangzhou.

Yuexiu Park is a 58 hectares park which has lakes and wooded rolling paths. Great place to see the local enjoy their weekends whether doing tai qi or line dancing or rowing boats.

Sculpture Of 5 Rams, Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou, China

In Yuexiu Park you'll find The Sculpture of the Five Rams, the symbol of Guangzhou. It was erected in 1959 at the top of Yuexiu Hill. Legend has it that long ago there were five celestial beings, who wore robes of five colours. One day they rode rams through the air to Guangzhou, each carrying a stem of rice. They presented the people with the rice stems as a sign from heaven that the area would be free from famine forever. Apparently the city than took the name City of Rams, or Goat City. Guangzhou in Chinese, however, means 'broad region".

Scultpure of the Five Rams

While walking within the 58 Hectares of the Yuexiu Park I came across the Sculpture of the 5 Rams. The legend behind the sculpture is something about five celestial beings riding through the air on rams to bring rice to the first settlers of the area. It is considered to be a sign that people would never suffer from famine here.I'm not sure if it worked but seems to have!! It was a pleasant area up on a hill. There are a couple of different paths to take to get here.

Zenhai Tower

Yuexiu Park is a nice place to spend a pleasant afternoon. There are lot's of interesting things to see here as it's a huge park. The Zenhai Tower,Sculpture of the Five Rams and the Sun Yatsen Monument were the highlights for me and also just people watching.
The Zenhai Tower was sort of interesting as was built during the Ming Dyanasty. Currently it houses a museum that has some decent displays. I had a hard time to know what things were as everything was written in Chinese but still interesting to look at. There were 5 floors of displays. I only visited 3 floors and called it good enough.
