    Baiyun Mountain (White Cloud Mountain)

by xiquinho Written Sep 23, 2004

Consists of some 30 peaks and is about 15km north of the city. The mountain region is refreshingly lush and green, and has some nice scenery, especially during sunset. A botanical garden and a bird park have recently been opened as new tourist attractions.

For an easy break from the city, take bus 24 or a taxi to the foot of Baiyun (White Clouds) Mountain and walk up. Alternatively, if you are lazy or incapable, there is a cable car. The walk is lovely and the winding paths link lots of rest stops; pagodas, temples and teahouses. The entire mountain is a country park covered in lush forest intersected by clear streams. The walk to the top is supposed to take 2 hours but I did it in 30mins.

Once you get to the top there is a viewpoint with an old high-powered military telescope which you can pay to look through. Also of interest is the bird park where you can see a range of native and foreign birds. The trained parrots are particularly entertaining.

Entry to the park is 15RMB, more if you take the cable car. The bird park is extra too. Please take a look at my travelogue for more pictures.
