The 58m/190ft high Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Yide Lu Street is the largest Roman Catholic church in China. The French architects Vonutrin and Humbert built it between 1863 and 1888 in Neo-Gothic style out of granite that was transported from Kowloon in Hong Kong. The land was granted to France as compensation for its loses during the Second Opium War. Its four bells were cast in France as were the stained-glass windows.
Open: 8am-6pm.

After that, the area was "leased" to the French and construction of the church followed shortly thereafter...

As you walk around the church, you will first notice it is almost impossible to enter. The main front entrance is enclosed behind a large wide expanse of iron bars that are locked up, except perhaps on Sundays, presumably... Rounding the exterior, you will notice that the stained glass windows have irregular broken pieces that have not been repaired or restored in any way... It is a marvelous decay, with metaphorical reverberations of meaning...

The only other Christian church in the world that creates the kind of stunning surrealistic impact of Guangzhou's Sacred Heart Church would have to be St.Patrick's Cathedral in midtown Manhattan... Both churches are beautifully grotesque Gothic architectures, set amidst a more modern-style network of structures which surround them. Although Guangzhou and New York are very very different in style, both scenes create the same stirring sense of the surreal... Shown here, a close up of Sacred Heart Church and its twin spires...
