The 49m/161ft high Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall is located at the southern end of Yuexiu Gongyuan Park and is dedicated to the memory of Dr Sun Yatsen, who was the first president of the Chinese Republic, which was founded in 1911. This imposing octagonal building was erected in 1931 in the classical Chinese style. The hall, which is used for cultural events, has space for more than 4000 people.

In the gardens in front of the hall can be seen a bronze statue of Sun Yatsen, erected in 1956, while to the west lies a small museum which keeps the politician's memory alive.

Open: 8am-6pm. Admission: RMB10.

One of Guangzhou 's major landmarks, the impressive imposing octagonal memorial hall building of nearly 50meter high can be ssen from the road in bright colors with traditional Chinese architecture.

Popular with tourists, it has a statue of the founder of Modern China, Dr. Sun Yat sen, who helped overthrew the Machu Qing Dynasty that had suffered a series of humiliating defeats to Western powers and Japan and conceding unfair treatise.

Interestingly, Dr. Sun Yat was a missionary trained doctor who spent time in USA, Japan and Malaysia and Singapore including raising money from overseas Chinese in his efforts to set up a new republic in China.

Dr. Sun left a legacy for modern China with the Three Principles of the People - nationalism, democracy, and social well-being.

The Memorial is quite famous as being a structure built during the Chinese revolution in 1931. It was designed by renowned architect Lu Yanzhi, who also designed the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing. There are some 4,700 seats in the auditorium but it was designed with no beam and thereforeno echos.

The interior is decorated with paintings and patterns of strong national features.

Outside the main entrance stands the statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The memorial hall is built in memory of Sun Yat-sen who was the pioneer of China's bourgeois democratic revolution.

Open time: 8:00am - 5:00pm

Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall

The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall and grounds is just so impressive. It is now used for concerts and conventions, which could limit your ability to go inside. But the outside view and the grounds are fantastic.

The Sun Yat Sen Memorial is beautiful from afar

The octagon Sun Yat Sen looks impressive from the outside, just the kind of architecture want to see but can't seem to find in Guangzhou.

But, there's a reason the admission is so cheap. Once you walk in, there's not a whole lot to do.

After you walk around and visit the restroom, go back where it can be appreciated the best, outside.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was built in 1931 in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Father of China who was the leader in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty. The whole building, octagonal in shape, is of typical Chinese architectural style. At the center of the hall stands the statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and hangs a plaque with the golden words of "The Whole World as a Community", which was inscribed by Dr. Sun.

Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Guangzhou, China

The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall was built in 1931 on the original site of Sun Yat-Sen's Presidential Office. The hall is surrounded by well kept lawns and gardens and there is a small museum (No English captions) behind the hall. The hall itself is quite grand but inside you won't find a great deal apart from seats as the hall is used for meetings and performances. In 1956, a bronze statue of Dr Sun was erected in front of the hall.

If you don't know who Sun Yat-Sen was, here is a bit about him: He was born on November 12, 1866 at Cuiheng Village of Guangdong province and was a leading figure in China's revolution against the Qing government and the first President of the Republic.

In August 1905, he formulated the Three Principles of the People - nationalism, democracy, and social well-being. He believed these to be the guidelines for building a modern China. There is a plaque in the hall with the words "The Whole World as a Community" which was inscribed by Sun Yat-sen himself.

It seems ironic that this is such a prominent building in the city when the Chinese government so blatently ignore the Dr’s words. I think we'd all be better off if we worked together a bit more.

Admission to the grounds is 10RMB, payable at the front gate.

I can't remember what this was all about but it was in the Hall. There are however 2 plaques in the hall. One above the entrance of the door, which bears in gold the words "Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall" inscribed by Liao Chengzhi who was the vice chairman of the standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Another has the words "The Whole World as a Community" which was inscribed by Sun Yat-sen himself. This could be either one of these.
