It's a four hour plus ride from Hong Kong to Kaiping. You will need to disembark the bus in Shenzhen when you are crossing the border. This means taking out your luggage and all your belongings. Suitcases, etc will be passed through an x-ray machine and your passports and Visas will be checked by border security.
My bus ride was horrendous and uncomfortable as the bus was cramped full of people, no air-condioning, bus driver constantly honking it's horn at people on bikes, mopeds, etc so you can't sleep, and there was a ton of traffic so my ride turned into 6-7 hours. I'd take the ferry any day.

The first afternoon we took a taxi to one of the villages, and he waited for us. This was quite an expensive way of doing things. Agreed price was meter plus 100, so it came to 250 (RMB) altogether.
I don't recommend you do that!

I will always take the taxi to go around places because of the relative cheap price. Within the city limit you will not spend over $30rmb to go anywhere. Another alternative if your in a hurry or want to save a little money is to ride the motorbikes for at least half the price. $10rmb can get you most places in the city in a motorbike. They can easily be identified by the yellow outerwear that they wear. There are also many unmark vans that acts similar to taxis without the meter of course so negotiation of price is highly adviced.

There are plenty of minibus drivers hanging around outside the downtown bus station. We were able to hire one for a full day (six hours) for 280 RMB.
