Had wonderful dim sum at Shang Palace in this 5 Star hotel, the Shangri-La Shenzen. Location is just across the border from Hong Kong to Shenzen. You walk on the pedestrian bridge pass the Railway Station and then come down the stairs to just in front of the hotel. Standard array of dim sum and high quality in taste, prepared by Hong Kong chefs. Excellent service but pricey. Consider the buffet style package vs ala carte depending on the number of persons and your appetite. Excellent food with an excellent service. The first time we came there, everybody watched us, even the local kids came to gave us a hand. The next days we tried to order ourselves, but with the knowledge of our Chinese, that wasn't always easy. You see here, Alfred from Hong Kong, me and Theo.

The service is perfect, if you take a sip of your tea or beer, they fill it up again. Is your plate a bit full with bones or other things, they bring another one. And the food is delicious. The first time we (Europeans) entered we got giggles and smiles, later they were used to us, but ordering stays an special experience. Leave a Comment

It's a huge restaurant that sits on the second floor of a shopping centre in a busy area of Shenzhen. The interior decorated with oriental pictures, statues and plants. You see nicely dressed chefs cooking the main dishes in front of you. Each table has at least three waiters serving you. I feel like I'm in a posh restaurant serving luxourious food and it's cheap!!!!
The dishes are nicely decorated and arranged. Tastes delicious. The best dish would be the "The worlds number one bun" see picture - absolutely devine! Another short story here. After having visited the company's headquarters, shown in my off the beaten path tips, we have been brought to their canteen. That is another big building. The ground floor was a large hall with nothing in, no doors and just an elevator. Remember the "Men in black" movie? OK we took that elevator to the 1st floor, the doors opened and two lines of waitresses were there bowing to us. "My God, where are we?" I thought. I am no accustomed to such politeness. The guide, a petite chinese girl, drove us to a VIP room (VIP? me??). There was a table there layed japanese stile. I HATE japanese food... No forks, knives, spoons, just sticks. Chinese people are among the kindest I have ever met, very interested to hosts' comfort and so on, and it would a been a tragedy for the guide if we would have not appreciated the cuisine. We decided to survive and to avoid her harakiri. It has been dramatic, but not for he food, but for the sticks. Many of us tried to pretend they were not hungry, even if the would have easily eaten a bear, to avoid unpleasant adventures with sticks. They have been finally forced (by me, bastard...) to eat. THe guide was phlegmatic, maybe used to these misadventures, but waitresses were smiling and laughing at us. The most funny thing has been when the waitresses brought one small teapot, very hot and CLOSED. One guy from Milan had a drop of it, became dark red, and said "Wonderful!" Stupid guy. We thought he was red for tea temperature and so I poured out a bit of it. A strong smell of fish was clearly coming out of that tea. I glanced my neighbour and tried it. TERRIFIC! I adviced him and insulted in italian, always smiling, obviously, the guy from Milan. I opened the teapot. There was boiled fish and shrimps in it, it was not tea, but the water in which the fish was boiled... I have the utmost respect of the foreign habits, including cuisine, but that was definitely too much for me... Leave a Comment Theme: Japanese/Sushi

It seems to be out place but of all places in China Shekou has the most number of all-you-can-eat Brazilian BBQ restaurants! One worth visiting is actually inside the belly of the old MingHua Cruise Ship. It hitted the sandbar which used to be along the shore of Shekou in the 90s and has been beached and left to rust until a real estate group decided to build a park around the old boat in 2003. They also took out most of the ships inside and converted the hold into a restaurant and pub. The staterooms are now a hotel, worth spending the night there if you are visiting Shekou. At Fuyong, Shenzhen and other towns in the vicinity, Sichuan food seems to be very popular and there are many Sichuan restaurants. Essentially, Sichuan food is from the Sichuan province of China (see my VT Sichuan Sheng page) and the food is usually very hot and spicy, to the extent of numbing your tongue! More photos are at the travelogue section of this VT page. Leave a Comment

There is an interesting restaurant in Shenzhen which has a Mao Zedong theme, however I cannot remember its name and location (it is located along a street with many neighbouring restuarants). It serves various Chinese dishes and the price is reasonable, though the food is not really that good. Leave a Comment

There is a nice Japanese restaurant at the Shenzhen Sunway Hotel located at Fuyong just across the road to the Shenzhen airport. This restaurant serves good Japanese food including sushi and the atmosphere is nice (see photos). The waitresses are also friendly but the food is not cheap.
