  • Fuyong Terminal is 5 minutes next to the Shenzen Airport at Baoan. It is an easy alternative to take a ferry or fast boat from Hong Kong to Shenzen with less queueing time in crossing than the land immigration and custom of both Hong Kong and China.

Have met with many business travels at the ferry terminal coming from Hong Kong. There is a small restaurant for waiting. Just have to know the schedule in advance and at least 60 minutes of check in with luggage or 30 minutes without to ensure you do not miss the boat.

The Shenzen Baoan International Airport has an international and a domestic terminals connected to each other. It is cheaper to fly to other parts of China from here than from Hong Kong.

Near the airport, there is the Fuyong ferry terminal which goes to Hong Kong.

Easy taxi and bus access from the airport to downtown Shenzen to cross to Hong Kong.
The airport is connected by an excellent modern highway to Dongguan and Guangzhou.

    Shenzhen

There are many express direct bus connection between Shenzen (Lowu) to neighboring towns like Dongguan, Humen, Guangzhou or Zhuhai.

There is also intra-city buses and buses to local neighborhoods. Check with locals where to wait for the buses depending on your destinations.

For long distance buses to towns in Guangdong, you cannot book in advance. Just stand in queue. When the bus arrives and pay as you board or after you have seated. Those behind in the queue will then wait for the next bus.

Do not be surprised if sometimes, someone come on board the bus just before departure, then videotaped everyone. It is to deter bus robbery.

Anyway, do not carry a lot of valuable and cash. If you have, you should afford a taxi but better to ask a friend to pick you up.

Found it very easy to go around by buses. Have your destination written in Chinese charactors if you are do not speak Chines. Note that many long distance buses stop running earlier, 7-9 pm.

Turbojet Sea Express offers regular and comfortable ferry services from Hong Kong's airport to Fuyong ferry terminal which is just 5 minutes from Shenzhen airport and about 1 hour from Shenzhen city. This is a good and comfortable way to travel from Hong Kong to Shenzhen and Fuyong, instead of going in by road which is a big hassle and there are pickpockets at the road checkpoint. More information is at the website below and the ferry ticket costs about HK$200 one way. There are also ferry services which travel from Kowloon to Fuyong and back. In general, the ferries are well maintained, comfortable and air-conditioned, plus food and drinks are sold on board.

    Train to Guangzhou and beyond

  • Shenzen is a major train stop for travellers from or to Hong Kong. The train station is right after the border crossing. So the Lowu Shopping, train station and bus station are all connected by building or pedestrian bridge - very convenient but very crowded..

There are fast or regular train to Guangzhou but limited service and no late night train. Easy to use but the trains and train stations are not that clean or well maintained perhaps due to high traffic of people.

Try the double decker train to Guangzhou. Have not taken the train to Shanghai or Beijing. Perhaps to Tibet one day.

This is the most expensive way of travelling to Shenzhen, but it’s also the most comfortable way of getting there. Why well when you travelled by ferry and by train you know what I’m talking about.

The boats have a maximum capacity of 400 passengers and it takes about one hour from HK to Shenzhen. At the customs at the Chinese side, you are only with the people from the boat and things go relatively fast.

In Hong Kong go to the China Ferry Terminal in Canton Road in Kowloon, here you can buy your tickets and it’s also the place where the ferries leave.

The ferry arrives in the Fu Yong Ferry Terminal close to the Shenzhen international airport.

There are 16 trips daily and the sailing time approx. 1 hour. The departures are between 0730 and 1945

    It cost approximately 180 HK$ one-way.

  • the route to Lo Wu - Shenzhen
    the route to Lo Wu
    by Alain_Smeets
Take the KCR towards Lo Wu, this is the mainland boundary, it’s at the border between China and Hong Kong. There is a train almost every 10 minutes, so you don’t have to wait so long as for the ferry.

Lo Wu is the end station of the line and also the place where most people will leave, especially on a Monday evening when all the Hong Kong people are going back to Shenzhen to their work.

You don’t have to walk towards customs, just go with the flow and feel as one big happy family with the hundreds and hundreds of other travellers who all want to go to China. It can take a bit longer to clear the immigrations, but it’s a great experience. Once at the other side, you will cross the border river and then you have to go through immigrations at the Chinese side.

A ticket will cost you between 20 and 33 HK$, depending of your starting point.

    Crossing at Huanggang Border

Most tourists and business travellers from Hong Kong Airport will cross to Shenzen at the Huanggang border which is much closer than Lowu crossing. You do not have to pass through downtown Hong Kong of Kowloon.

Instead you will pass two beautiful bridges on the way to Huanggang.

Most travellers use hired cars or the bus shuttles from the airport their different destinations in Shenzen or other towns in Guangdong province. You need to carry your luggage across the border point which is a burden.

If you are in Hong Kong, you are taking the MTR metro system, you should get to Thim Shai Tsui station ( Red line). Then walk to Hung Hom KCR terminal. You will spend about HK37 to ride the train to Lo Wu station. Once you have gone through immigration, you will see Shenzhen, Lo Wu. In Lo Wu, you can take taxi, bus, or metro to anywhere you want. Very easy.

Most tourists or business travellers from Kowloon will take the train to Lowu for a land crossing.

At Lowu border, there is usually 30 minutes to 1 hour waiting time to cross the border depending on the time of the day and whether it is a weekend or around public holidays.

As it can be crowded, be careful of your passport, wallet and luggage.

On the China side of Lowu, you can continue on a train, bus or taxi to other parts of Shenzen or other towns in Guangdong province.
