Islamic restaurant: Pulled noodles of the north-east

    by view.finder Written Apr 8, 2013
    Lanzhou lamian restaurant

Islamic run restaurant next to the Backerei bakery on Shihua East Road. Didn't eat here but desperately wanted to as regularly eat at these restaurants in Ganzhou where I live. Clean and tasty colourful food, served fast and made beautifully by the talented minority races of China who "pull" and prepare the noodles fresh each time ... truly an event worth watching.
Signature dish is the simple but satisfying 拉面, "la mian", noodles in soup usually served with beef.

What to buy: Noodle and rice dishes, bread

    What to pay: 5RMB upwards

    Backerei: Breakfast in Zhuhai

    by view.finder Written Apr 8, 2013
    Backerei, Shihua Dong Lu

A clean and small bakery with fresh bread all day. Reminiscent of the British cafe ("caf'"), serves tea, coffee and juices, even with several set breakfasts options. I ate there twice, finding a delicious bacon and bread wrap that reminded me of the good old bacon sandwich. They also have a wide selection of pastries and bread rolls, great to store in the backpack whilst sightseeing or to sit and watch Zhuhai go about their morning.

What to buy: All sorts of foreign, yet familiar items you can't get easily at breakfast time in China. Strongly recommend this place if you are anywhere nearby.

What to pay: Baguettes and rolls from 6RMB upwards.

    GONGBEI UNDERGROUND SHOPPING COMPLEX

Huge complex. The entire open concrete area in front of the border crossing has two floors of shops under it. Even among these knock-offs, differences in grade can be seen for the same model in different shops. Whatever you buy here, always bargain and bargain hard. edit

What to buy: Find several hundred shops, many with goods targeted at tourists, such as clothing and shoes, jade and other jewelery, handicraft e.g. Tibetan accessories, and consumer electronics. There are also many CDs and DVDs for sale at cheap prices, although they are unlicensed copies. Also available in abundance are imitation watches with incredible resemblance to the real ones (Rolex, Breitling, Patek Philippe, Movado, and Omega, just to name a few).

Some Chinese Signs!: Lost In Paradise

For sure the expats do love these paradies where you can shop till you drop. This is indeed amazing to see so many shops you cannot even count! We were told if we do see something we want to buy we have to buy immediately. Or just do your bargain!

Because you will never ever find the shop back again!

And ... going for an English speaking shopkeeper is hopeless, hard to find though worth a try ...

What to buy: I tell you if you take a walk between all of these shops, boutiques, working places, galleries etc. you'll never gonna fall asleep that night. It is so overwhelming you cannot make an image of it. Whatever you admired in the Far West you will find here, in the East Nearby ...

What to pay: Oh mama mia,... this is incredible. Be sure donot pay too much and that sounds ridiculus in a country where all is cheap! Just bargain on a calculator... so you won't get fooled.

  • Jusco: Jusco is just the best

Best overall department store in Zhuhai. Has best grocery dept and clothing depts.

What to buy: The grocery is organized like a western grocery store. Lots of selection and the prices, while a little bit more, are not that bad.

What to pay: A little more than the average grocery store but it's worth it.
