    Yuan Ming Palace

    Yuan Ming Palace, Zhuhai
    4 more images

The Yuan Ming Palace (Yuan Ming Xin Yuan) is a 1:1 replica of the new (not the old one!) Summer Palace in Beijing. I was keen to visit to witness the regal superiority of this Chinese building however being holiday time the experience had a rather theme park feel to it all.

The grounds are indeed beautiful but surrounding the palace facades and courtyards are noisy amusements, fair ground rides and replica Western style buildings and even a waterpark. Things are in and out of construction and many facilities old and not is use. There is a European style maze which I'm pretty sure is not in the original Palace in Beijing, half of which had been flattened so it seemed kind of pointless having the rest of the maze open ...

Had a much better experience as I usually do climbing the mountain behind and escaping the crowds.

This Qing Ming Festival (4-6th April 2013) entrance to the park was free, however this contradicts other reviews.

We later paid 70 RMB to watch the 4pm stage show of some traditional Chinese arts which we were quite excited about. Waiting in the large amphitheatre section of one corner of the park for almost one hour (resting as it was a tiring day) we watched in anticipation as many performers turned up for work and disappeared into the wings of the impressive stage - then, at five minutes to the hour the show was pulled as there were not enough people in the audience to justify performing. Really just a handful - less than 10 in an arena of several thousand I would guess. The shows had been really positively received in other online reviews so I was really gutted about this and we were told to leave in a rather brash way which was slightly comical and tragic. There was another performance at 7pm by which point I was a long way from the Palace.

Zhuhai - modern beach resort city

by SLLiew Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Since opening as a Special Economic Zone for manufacturing next to Macao, Zhuhai has become a major tourism location like Shenzen.

There are many golf resorts, beaches and islands to visit including theme parks. There are many seafood and Chinese restaurants and place for foot reflexology, karaoke and night entertainment as well as hot springs.

There are many industrial parks with factories of Taiwanese, Hong Kong as well foreign companies with the Made in China for domestic consumption and the rest of the world.

The nearby Zhongshan, the birth place of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, considered the father of Modern China by China and Taiwan is worth a day trip visit.

There are many modern apartment buildings and high rises built along the beautiful sea coast.

Immitation of the Yuanming Palace in Beijing. The park has many attractions from ancient emperors' artifacts and clothes to floating restaurants and traditional Chinese architecture. It offers amazing photo opportunities with the mountains as a backdrop and there are many little pagodas to distract yourself with. In the evening, at the Northern side of the park, there are impressive stage shows depicting traditional Chinese dances and stories in a Broadway style musical presentation. This is a must-see. Also, in the Northern most part of the park there is a sea-battle re-enactment using real boats, explosions and also a troop of cavalry to add to the realism.

The New Yuanming Palace Zhi Zu Le
In front of a beautiful building like old Chinese palace, young boys and girls in traditional coutumes welcome you.
They show you to the room, where you will be given a massage.
First they put your feet into hot medecinal water. This is very comfortable after walking and travelling a lot. The foot massage will last for about an hour.
If you want to have a massage for your whole body, tell them so. They will take you to another room, where you are told to lie yourself down on a bed. They will give you another hour's massage.
You should pay less than 20 US dollars for foot massage and body massage ( 2 hours )altogether.

Take a cable car to the top of the hills, you will be able to see the sea view as well as the mountain view of Zhuhai & Macau.
It cost around 50 RMB for the cableway.
When you are about to reach the top, there is a phototaking service, you just need to wave your hand, then a picture will be taken for you, and of course, payment is required.
You may also choose to slide down from the top.

    The Hai Zhu beer

by MarioPortugal Written Jul 5, 2008

Look to the name of the city, Zhuhai, then change the order of the characters to read Hai Zhu, and it is the name of the most popular beer available in Zhuhai.

It's not a bad beer when compared with the other Chinese beers available locally. So, remember, once in Zhuhai, my suggestion is for you to order an Hai Zhu.

Visit a oyster farm in Zhuhai

by jackiesg Updated Apr 8, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We visited an oyster farm in zhuhai. In there, we could see many big oysters breeding in the sea. You can walk along the wooden poles where they hang strings of breeding oysters, see people shelling the oysters and of course taste some fresh oysters. I find the oysters were not as tasty as those you can find in say, western countries, but partly bcos we have all ordered cooked oysters. (Who would dare to try fresh oysters? :))

We had charcoal grilled oysters which were the best, the deep fried oysters which were quite alright and cheese baked oysters where the cheese don't taste like cheese.

It's a pleasant visit, you can see oyster shells everywhere and the cool sea breeze makes the place very relaxing.

    Cross to Macao

by SLLiew Written Feb 14, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are not coming from Macao to Zhuhai, take the opportunity to cross the border to visit Macao with its Portuguese influence and international casinos.

But remember if you re-enter China from Macao, you need another China visa entry.

You can join a local tour or take a combination of buses and taxis to get around Macao which is really small and unique with a combination of Chinese and Portuguese heritage.

    Fisher Girl Statue of Zhuhai

by SLLiew Written Feb 14, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A modern Zhuhai landmark is the Fisher Girl Statue located at the coast on the north east of downtown. This nearly 9 meter sculpture was based on a local folk tale. It is located at the scenic bay of Xianglu Bay.

The view surrounding of mountain, open sea and modern condominium skyscrappers into the blue sky was worth the visit. There arer stone bridges over the sea for some nice photo shots.

Can be reached by Bus 9 or Bus 99. We drove there.

The beautiful ocean-lady ... I could not miss her and really was very focussed this time in December 2007.

Though ... even I met the famous Zhuhai "Fishing Lady" I got so unlucky because my batteries went down and there I stood before her all alone, admiring the really beatiful statue of the Fishing Lady, with a pearl in her hands ... and could not take one single pic of her !!!

So the only memory for the time is a post-card ... and I will go back end of 2008 to see her again... and take a pic of her... if allowed

    Drop Shopping?

by RoyJava Updated Oct 10, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    square-zhuhai

I donot think you will strike out the shopping-time from your wanna-do list. I met some people who came to China from Macau for some other things to do though most of my friends went for the shopping areas.

And most of them returned with too many shoppings, carrying too many presents, too many clothes, too many souvenirs and a lot of less money.

Is a funny thing, isn't it? Our greed and desire for grab things wherever is so human and so like Alice in Wonderland ... so China is a paradise for sure.

And why not? There is so much to buy, and for such cheap prices. But still,... remind these prices, too, will empty your wallet. So use your calculator for bargains (they donot speak English, so better do business like real traders, with your hands and convincing power), and remember the best price is around a third from the starting point of bargaining ... like anywhere in the world. Enjoy your shopping time !

    Just Around The ...

    promenade-zhuhai

When leaving the border-mall of Zhuhai at the Gongbei Gate you may enter Zhuhai-city. Well, to me it looked like walking into the center. A very nice promenade where you cannot read a thing! The promenade street is named the "Lotus Street".

Ofcourse Zhuhai, actually a prefecture-level city, is Chinese and they donot mind their language for translating not the least trouble. I can imagine, why they should anyway?

Just go for that walk and enjoy the hustle and bustle here. Try, please try some of the delicious food in the stalls and do not ask what it is. I had some wonderful tries and I must tell you, it was absolutely delicious. Ofcourse my brother knew how to order and told us later what we had eaten ... *lol*
