A local lady contacted the sedan chair porters and agreed on a price of RMB150 per sedan chair.
The leader of the sedan chair porters took us to a hotel and insisted that we stay there. He definitely arranged for a commission if we had stayed there.
We refused and told him that it was the wrong hotel as we had showed the hotel picture to the lady earlier. He insisted that the hotel is a long way up and he wanted to charge us RMB 300. As we were with old ladies who cannot walk, we had no choice but pay him RMB300. We found out from our hotel owner later that it cost only RMB 180
Unique Suggestions: Remember the unscrupulous porter in the photo and avoid using him. Get another porter to carry the bag. When you reach the hotel, then ask the hotel owner to arrange for another group to carry the sedan chair for you friends who cannot walk. Porter to carry your luggage is only RMB 20 to RMB 30.
Fun Alternatives: Call the hotel owner to arrange for porters to carry your bags and also for the sedan chair to carry old folks or those with walking disabilities. In that way, you know the price and won't fall for the porter scam.
You will also find ladies dressed in colourful traditional wears offering to take pictures with you, usually against the rice fields as backdrops. By all means pose with them...but pay. If i am not mistaken, per session is 30-50yuan.
Along some of the viewpoint stations or near villages, you will see group of Hong Yao ladies offering to show you how they expertly comb their really long hair (yeap...some hair even touching the ground..) and then coil it up into a neat bun, without looking into the mirror!. You need to pay to watch...so if you are not going to pay, try not to look or even take a picture!
Unique Suggestions: If you are really interested to watch...be discreet. Pace yourself far away and watch from a distance! I did just that!
