We came toward the end of the day, at 4pm ish and enjoyed the quiet park. It was alright. I was not impressed with the cave though. Yeah, it`s a cave and yeah, it`s illuminated but nothing to blow your mind away. :-) Camel hill did not make an impression either. I liked however, the zoo. Especially the tiger cage where people are allowed to walk in and take a photo sitting on a tiger. No kidding! See the pic #2. It`s not free of course. TIME: 8/10am - 5pm. FEE: 43RMB ($5.4) for the park + 30RMB ($3.75) for the Sevenths Star Cave. Directions: At the end of Jiefang Donglu (Jiefang Road, East) and approximately one kilometre from the downtown area of Guilin.

When you are in Guilin, visiting the night market is a must! This market is set up every evening in the centre of the city and you can find literally everthing there. Even if you are not into markets & haggling (like me) , it is still fun & a unique experience. Leave a Comment

On the western bank of Li River and the north end of Binjiang Road, the isolated and imposing Fubo Hill is based on the ground in part and in water in part. Stone steps zigzag onto the hill, passing by the Resting Ground and Scenic Pavilion on the hill shoulder. On the hillside there are scenic spots such as Returning Pearl Cave, Thousand Buddha Rock and Sword Testing Stone which is a thread of space over the ground (a mere one inch gap), in addition to the stone inscriptions and buddha carvings from Tang and Song dynasties. Near to the entrance where you can see a bronze statue of a general (General Fubo) on horse, there's plenty of souvenir stalls for you to test your bargaining skills. They are selling mostly knick-knacks, bracelets and postcards. Once you enter the Fubo Hill compound you can see many species of flowers and plants with clear label. There's a gazebo with a giant green copper bell which weighs 2524kg. The area here is shady with some old and big banyan trees. A small temple is situated inside the Thousand Buddha Rock. This is the main reason why people come to this part of China. The scenery along the river are is the stuff memories are made of . The backdrop is limestone hills that were formed over 200 million years ago . They rise here and there along the banks and appear amid rice fields. The journey takes about 4 hours and we couldn't stop taking pictures... Address: Guilan to Yangshuo

After a couple of days listening to the guides attaching names to everything that could be promoted for the tourists, I confess that I was expecting a small cave with a few stalactites seeming... bamboo. I was positively surprised by the size and beauty of the caves. Of course, each rock and formation won a name and a story, but the cave is very interesting, due to the elaborated game of lights and the contrasts they create. Situated only 5 km far from Guilin, they are easy to visit by taxi or bicycle, if you are not in a package as we were. Leave a Comment

Now it's the address for Guangxi Normal University. The Solitary Beauty Peak is just at the vicinity. Visiting this place you can see students attending classes. In the ancient days, this is the city for princes of the Ming Dynasty. Perfectly combining the natural landscape and historical sites, it is praised as a "City inside a city" since ancient time. The whole compound is vast with Solitary Beauty Peak, halls, bedrooms, gardens, lake and temple. The area is fortified with a wall of 3km in length. Once you entered the front gate, you will be guided into a museum with some simple introduction of this place and all the princes in the Ming Dynasty. At the foot hill of Solitary Beauty Peak, there's a Yueya Lake with small little bridge and a gazebo. Scholars of the olden days like to study here. There's also a monument commemorating Dr. Sun Yat Sen. In the Qing Dynasty, Jingjiang Princes City was converted to be the Examination Hall for scholars who wants to gain a position in the Imperial Palace. Tourist will be required to sit for a mock-up examination in seprate cubicles answering four questions. Write your answers with the chinese brush and ink provided on the yellow colour exam paper. One tip for you while visiting this place: listen attentively when the tour guide is explaining. You will be rewarded if you pass the exam. You will then be given an instruction from the emperor and become an officer in the Imperial Palace. You will have the chance to undergo the ceremony with full costumes. Enjoy and act like you are in a movie. Entrance fee is RMB20. Leave a Comment

We were only in Guilin for one day and wanted to make the most of our time so we hired a guide and driver for the day through our hotel. This entitled us to see the Solitary Beauty Peak, Yu Gardens, Yao Cable car and the Mausoleums of Jingjiang Princes. We discussed what we wanted to see and cut out the City Tour and the Flute Reed Cave. Cost 120 Yuan not including cost of entry tickets. On reflection it would have been better for us to have researched Guilin better and maybe organised a car to go northward and perhaps see the Longji Terraces.

Along with enjoying the incredible scenery ,as we sailed along the Li river we also had a chance to get a glimpse of what life was like living along the banks. WE saw people washing clothes in the river , swimming and walking their water buffalo back to their farms.

We were so excited when we saw these animals for the first time wading in the shallow waters of the Li River . They are pretty plentiful and used on the farms to do heavy work . Address: Li River
