Bring layers if you're staying for a while. Expect to be COLD in the winter and hot and sweaty in the late Spring through early Fall. They sell lots of fake North Face, Tommy Hillfiger, Timberland, etc. and it's cheap. Thermal underwear is a must in winter.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring any medical supplies you think you might need. The availability and variety is very limited in China, so don't expect to find what you want. Bring your own antibiotic salve, ibuprofin, antihistamines, vitamins and any prescription medication you might need. The hospital in Yangshuo is BASIC, try not to get sick! Don't worry about shampoo, toothpaste, face cream, etc. It's all available.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring your own mosquito net - very useful.
Miscellaneous: Mosquito repellant is mandatory once the weather starts to warm up. Yangshuo has both large and slow mosquitoes and small and fast mosquitoes, all of which are VERY hungry. If they bite you, put on mentholatum (buy it at a local pharmacy). Take your own repellant, the Chinese varieties are very weak. The villages also have dengue fever and Japanese Encephalitis, both of which come from mosquito bites.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies:
You will need mosquito repellant - we were in Yangshuo during winter and there were mosquitos in our room!!
Photo Equipment: Polarising lens in case it is misty - don't want to miss out on that fantastic scenery??
Miscellaneous: We always carry a small jug, cups, tea and packet soup so we can boil water when ever we want and have something warm to drink.
If you like reading you will need a portable reading light. few Chinese hotels had strong bedside lights.
Yangshuo has the highest precipitation / rainfall in the spring season. Farmers start to plough and irrigate their land. However, it is also a time when tourists like to visit the countryside and farms. So make sure to begin your day of sight-seeing by biking, trekking or walking, always carry an umbrella or raincoat and wear a water-proof jacket.
When packing your luggage, be sure to bring extra pair of shoes / sandals and socks for changing if they are soiled.
Miscellaneous: Hairdryer will come in handy not only to dry your hair but also to dry your shoes or clothes in case you don't have fresh ones for changing. Voltage in China is 240v. Adapter is required.
Luggage and bags:
Pack light. You can wear the same thing every day and no one would look twice at you.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Very hot in Summer and very cold in winter.
Either way, you can always buy what you forget. Their are plenty of clothes shops and if you can't find what you want, they will make it within 48 hours.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Ladies items are essential as they do not sell tampons anywhere in Yangshuo. Western medicine is also a good idea if you are suseptible to getting sick. There is plenty of chinese medicine available however I found anti-histamines, antibiotics, diahorrea and constipation medicine quite handy at times.
Photo Equipment: Camera is essential as the scenery in incredible.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Sleeping sheets are handy otherwise just get one made.
Miscellaneous: Foreign coins and stamps are welcomed by many of the locals. Many of them have never left the province and many never will, so it is there way to touch the outside world.
