    Don't remember: West Street

by solopes Updated Dec 31, 2013

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Yangshuo - China

After some days in China, the chance to eat western food was well accepted by all the members of the group.

We went to West street where, it seems, most places sell western food and drinks.

We were in a hurry to go see the cormorants fishing and ate... something like western food, with western drinks.

I don't remember the place nor the food, which means that, not being a memorable dinner it filled my expectations, but the choice in west street is really big.

Gongcheng Oil Tea: Local snack you should not miss in Yangshuo

    by ug.xiaohei Updated Apr 4, 2011
    Oil Tead

Oil tea is a featured drink originated from another county next to Yangshuo, named "Gongcheng". Its strong grassy, salty gingery taste makes it disagreeable to most people at the first sip; but as you experience more, the distinguished fragrance and unique flavor make it more appreciable.

Linda and Xiaohei are both oiltea fan, especially after a hiking or cycling in a rather cold and damp weather, having a serving of oil tea would be the best way to recover. But it'd be better to serve with one or two local sticky rice cake named "Baba", because the alkline element in the tea might have harsh impact on your empty stomache.

The tea shop next to the hospital serves authentic and high quality oil tea. The friendly owner also sell simple stir-fry dishes and never over-charge. Their oil tea is purely handmade, and you may be lucky enough to catch their preparing, by mixing tea leaves, ginger and garlic all together in a stone mortar, during non-busy hour.

Favorite Dish: Oil Tea. The best old tea in Yangshuo.

  • Kelly's Cafe.: Guess we were there on a Bad Night for Kelly!

by fujisan Updated Dec 10, 2010

Food :- We ordered Apple Pancake with Ice Cream and Banana Pancake with 2 Fruit Juices.
The Carrot was not chopped properly and was Blended behind the Bar.
The Apple Pancake had no taste. Only ate half of it.

The Serving Staff were not very friendly which was surprising as had heard this was a friendly chilled place.

Other Customers seemed nice - there were some Russians - Guess we must have appeared when the Waitress was feeling under the weather.

This Cafe did have free wireless internet which was a positive though.

We asked for the Bill yet the Waitress refused to come to the table and wanted us to pay in front of the bar - despite the fact she did not seem busy.

We received no thankyou or goodbye when we left - We did not return!!

We Were very dissapointed - so found a lovely Cafe nearby called the Mimosa and another nice Cafe called the Rosewood where the staff are more friendly and serve promptly.

  • THE OLIVE GARDEN (ASSAGAY): AMAZING RUSTIC FOOD & SETTING!

Simply amazing! The Olive Garden is a new family restaurant which formerly was known as Riders Rest over looking the Dieters Nursery in Assagay. We went for a lunch last week and were pleasantly welcome with a beautiful rustic setting and surroundings. The food is all international Mediterranean dishes from Breakfasts, lunches, salads, platters, roasts, deserts, cocktails, tea and considerably prices and very well presented. I recommend sitting on the terrace overlooking and enjoying their stunning Bruchetta and a platter to share from Seafood to meat or even the Vegetarian option. A big thumbs up!

  • The Alley Yangshuo Beer Bar & Restaurant: great pizza and excellent beef steaks

by beerinchina Written Nov 16, 2010
The Alley - Yangshuo Beer Bar & Restaurant

They make thin-crust italian style pizza, and that's exactly how I like it, the beef steaks are tender and juicy and great value for money, they should work a little on their desserts, but then again, it's a bar in yangshuo, they do perfectly well, and they have loads of local and imported beers.

Favorite Dish: I love my steaks, and theirs are really good

Everywhere in Yangshuo: Duck, snails, sparrows, seafood!

by Stepwalk Written Jul 3, 2010
    2 more images

There are cafes all over the place with the greatest concentration being around West street. The food is fresh, cheap, and genuinely local so expect some very different delicacies! One of the local favorites is Beer Fish which is usually locally caught catfish cooked in beer. Also good were the barbecue cafes where you just pick what you want from a huge array and they barbecue it and spice it for you. This was where we had the sparrows on sticks which were actually quite nice even chewing through all the bones, beak, etc. The local beer was also good, and cold. You could even get imported wine in some cafes at reasonable prices.

Favorite Dish: Roast Duck was our favorite but I was particularly taken with the snails.

    Unknown cafe: Great filling breakfast

by Willettsworld Written Oct 20, 2008
Cafe on the right of photo

Can't remember what this place is called but it's on the right hand side of the photo with "Espresso" sign. Came here both mornings that I was in Yangshuo for a great western cooked breakfast which consisted of orange juice, yoghurt, hash browns, eggs, toast, tomatoes, bacon and a coffee all for RMB28. Great stuff!

Drifters: Superb freshly baked apple crumble!

by Willettsworld Written Oct 20, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Came here on my final night in Yangshuo and had a great mixed grill of pork, steak, sausage etc and an equally superb freshly baked apple crumble. You have to wait a while for the crumble as it's that freshly cooked it takes some time to come but its well worth it in the end. Nice little place which is fairly cheap as well.

Cafe del Moon: Not bad pizza's

by Willettsworld Written Oct 20, 2008

This "cafe" is really a restaurant above the Rosewood Cafe and it specialises in pizza's which aren't that bad but I've had better. The best thing about this place are the views along West Street from its 2nd floor balcony which you can sit on and watch and listen to the partying going on down below. Service is a bit on the slow side but otherwise not bad.

Jimmy's Cafe & Bar: Breakfast on On West Street

by bpwarne Updated Sep 22, 2008
    Jimmy's Cafe, West Street, Yangshuo

We ate breakfast at this cafe a couple times in May of 2008. Service was good, portions fairly large for this area. We paid about 25RMB, approx. $3.50USD for a breakfast of eggs or muesli, toast, large Lipton tea and fresh OJ. Orange juice is always pricey in China.

Minne Mao's Cafe: Minne Mao's Cafe

    by John195123 Written Feb 9, 2008
    Minne Mao's Cafe

Pretty location just off a small lake where cormorant fishermen laze about the green waters. The option to sit on the deck outside probably makes for highly contested seating during the warm months. They have internet and a pool table as well. The bridge just beyond the entrance to the deck provides good people-watching. Their food is decent- unless they simply messed up the order, the coffee-chocolate milkshake with icecream had no icecream and wasn't actually a milkshake- more like iced coffee. Banana pancakes are a delicacy in Yangshuo, though they're more like crepes. Their flavor at Minne Mao's is good enough, but I wasn't really impressed. The banana milkshake was good, but not really what the west thinks of as a milkshake either. That's all we ate there, but they have coffee and other real food and the main attraction in my mind is the deck.

    of Dumplings!: Dynasty...

    by John195123 Written Feb 9, 2008

    Dumpling Dynasty Sign
    1 more image

Dynasty of Dumplings provides northern-style dumplings to Yangshuo in a small but pleasant restaurant just off the main drag. The wooden exterior opens to a warm, family environment, and the TV will probably be on. They have a good selection of dumplings, many of which I believe are served 12 per order, plus many other items. Beer and other drinks are reasonably priced.

Favorite Dish: We had the pork and the lamb dumplings. As good as Harbin's!

There are three sauces to deal with- one is soy sauce, the second is vinegar, I believe, and the third is the pot of crushed chili peppers. Mix those for dipping, to taste, in the provided plate.

Cafe Under the Moon: Cafe Under the Moon

by Guantanamera Updated Jan 28, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Cafe Under the Moon, located on West Street in Yangshuo Town, serves some very good omelettes for breakfast, loaded with meat and vegetables... When order fresh juice, be sure to ask if it's all 100 percent juice or if they put water in it... Then they will bring you 100 percent juice... But if you don't ask, they will probably mix water in with the juice, and most restaurants in Yangshuo follow this same scheme...
