There 2-3 old villages near Chishui. Some of them have an entry fee, others don't. I don't remember the names of the villages, but the fee is not so high (15-20 rmb, I think). As we visited them in low season, we were the only tourists. I have no idea of crowds during holidays. What I think is that Chishui is not well known, so doesn't attract so many people. The villages don't have cars traffic. To reach one of them you need to cross a suspension bridge and ... no touts, no vendors, no tourists shops....

The hills surrounding Chishui are covered by bamboos. You find parks you can wander around. It's very nice and refreshing during the hot days.
