The scenery of the area aroung Guilin is incredible, limestone scarts form towers and steep hills and make for a memorable day trip.
The boats are large and lunch is served on board, drinks are also available.
The boats leave in a convoy and you pass by villages along the river and can see the people just going about their business, and water buffalo bathing in the river.
In one part of the river a group of local children were in the water and asked for money, which our guide asked us not to give them as they want to discourage them from swimming so close to the boats for safety reasons

I was a little unsure about cormorant fishing, it seems cruel when you hear about it and Im still not 100% sure its not, but it is a really unforgettable experience.
Cormorants are trained by their owners from an early age and have a string around their neck, they are able to swallow small fish but larger ones are given to their owner.
The birds seem genuinely to enjoy working with their owners, after all they make no effort to escape and come when called
Cormorant fishing takes place after dark, the lights from the boats attract the fish and the cormorants dive from the bamboo rafts returning to give up their catch before diving in again, it is the only time I have ever found fishing exciting, and Guilin is the only place you can see it
