Life is dependent on water here as in any place. Clothes and food are cleaned in the local streams, or with river water on the streets. As I've mentioned before, it's the same water that animals walk through and so on. The food may be cooked, but the plates, bowls and glasses are not. Many restaurants do have disinfecting cabinets. They get by and have for a long time, so it's not all bad, but there is also a lot of garbage in their waterways.
It's still odd to see primitive washing methods employed by such stylishly dressed people.

It seems that on occasion there are performances at one of the main drum towers in town. One night began with a procession through town, instruments, drums and singers drowned by firecrackers. They gathered at the bridge, where men, stopped just before the bridge, and women on the steps to it, traded traditional calls and songs.
The gathering crossed the bridge, a wooden bit of local architecture, and surrounded a drum tower, drawing close to the fire in the cool evening. The lights flashed off and on. Then again. Then off. Zhaoxing had no power for a few days, but the festival went on. Girls dressed in traditional ceremonial clothing sat and played instruments or sang, firelight and the blue-white of LED flashlights the only light beneath the drum tower. Occasional sprays of sparks lit the performers, until the leader, maybe the mayor, said, "enough". He had been seated, watching and enjoying, but as it looked like the lights were doomed to stay turned off, and the stage was black without them, he may have deemed it better to put off the play until morning. When we wandered back the next day, a crowd, less than the night before, had gathered to watch.

Everyone can singing and play their local instrument SHEN. Their singing is beautiful, but SHEN is driving me crazy, most of the time, they get three tunes only, just round and round, day and night.
