You can get to many of the villages via the main road, but for a bit of a trip in time try the mountain route. The path is pretty clear most of the time (I'm a bit of an idiot and I managed, so most people should be ok) and winds through some stunning scenery. Heading towards Tongan there's a tiny village a kilometer or so before you get there - Xiage. We whiled away a few hours there in pleasant mimed conversation and a little stilt walking around their drum tower.

walk up to a hill where locate a high school, you can have a view for the whole town. We stayed at Dong minority area for more than 5 days at the time, getting bored with those drum tower.
