Things to Do

Performances

Performances, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  There seem to be occasional performances. This one was shortly after the New Year, and had been postponed from the night before when the electricity went out all over town. They aren't professional actors, but it's still interesting to watch.

Impressions of Dongs

Impressions of Dongs, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  This being a Dong village, the sign makes sense, though I'm not sure if it's a hair salon or if there's more to it. There's at least one hair salon in town.

Tourist Services

Tourist Services, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  If you need help while in town, or maybe to make reservations, the Tourist Service Center can probably help. We didn't speak with them, but they're right on the corner by the Zhaoxing Hotel. They seem to close fairly early, around 5 or 6, maybe a bit later.

Stroll Main

Stroll Main, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  It's not very long and there's not all that much to see- Zhaoxing's a pretty small village for China. But you can walk the main road in under 30 minutes. From my time there, I consider one end of the village to be the "uphill" side and one to be the "downhill" side. I'll...

Local Delicasies: The Name Says It All, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  I didn't go here either, but it's another option on the main street. All of the local places seem to sell the same sort of thing. Maybe this one is a bit different.

Meets Bar: Another hangout

Meets Bar: Another hangout, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  It seems like a local joint, though with that name, is probably a place designed for tourists. I didn't go inside, but it's there for those who want it.

Any: It's fresh

Any: It's fresh, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  You know the food is fresh around here- they bring it in from the fields during the day. Just make sure it's washed.

Zhaoxing Hotel Restaurant: It's not in the hotel!

Zhaoxing Hotel Restaurant: It's not in the hotel!, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  We didn't eat here as the menu wasn't all that inspiring and the outdoor seating had a bunch of foreigners... we wanted something more local. But it seems like a nice place.

Nightlife

Not posers at bars: Real Nights Around Real People

Not posers at bars: Real Nights Around Real People, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  The nightlife scene involves restaurants and often the drum towers- places to hang out with friends and family. In such a small town, there isn't the rowdy bar crowd and scene that many foreigners call nightlife these days. And that's ok. Human connection, talking,...

Haixiang: Bar in Zhaoxing

Haixiang: Bar in Zhaoxing, Zhaoxing

strollingfish Says:  The other bar is named Haixiang whose owner is a Shanghainese. In fact it's more like a restaurant. Many options on the menu for eating and drinking. I was delighted to find they serve ginger coke in such a village as the longtime road trip had tired me much. Here you can...

Where to get buses

Where to get buses, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  Incoming buses drop passengers off at the center of town, right by the Tourist Services Center. We came into town from Long E, a stop past DiPing, via a van, which I'm sure cost more than it needed to, but it was the only way into town that evening. MAKE SURE in San Jiang...

Shopping

Jugulou: Handicraft

Jugulou: Handicraft, Zhaoxing

strollingfish Says:  Look at the inside of the shop. I like most of the things especially the clothes hanging on the left.

Jugulou: A traditonal national handicrafts exhibiting house

Jugulou: A traditonal national handicrafts exhibiting house, Zhaoxing

strollingfish Says:  The shop is on the main street. There're many beautiful goods selling. Select and bargain with the owner you can get a nice craft at a good price. The owner is very friendly. You can take a rest inside chatting with him or having a cup of coffee. Of course coffee is not free...

Local Customs

River Washing

River Washing, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  Life is dependent on water here as in any place. Clothes and food are cleaned in the local streams, or with river water on the streets. As I've mentioned before, it's the same water that animals walk through and so on. The food may be cooked, but the plates, bowls and...

Before the lights, playful song

Before the lights, playful song, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  Local women singing a seemingly playful song back to the local men, off-camera right.

Warnings Or Dangers

Remember that horse?

Remember that horse?, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  In one of the images of Zhaoxing, a horse stands in the creek: the same creek that runs into and through town, the same creek that the people use to wash their clothes, the same creek in which they often wash their... food.Keep that in mind when eating here. The food's...

Off The Beaten Path

Wander the fields

Wander the fields, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  Outside of town there are plenty of fields and terraces to wander. Just don't walk off the paths.

Nearby villages, the long route

Nearby villages, the long route, Zhaoxing

gifiltafish Says:  You can get to many of the villages via the main road, but for a bit of a trip in time try the mountain route. The path is pretty clear most of the time (I'm a bit of an idiot and I managed, so most people should be ok) and winds through some stunning scenery. Heading...

Public Restrooms

Public Restrooms, Zhaoxing

John195123 Says:  There are public restrooms available- head toward Lulu's Homestay- up the road that crosses the river on the uphill side of town (right side of the road).
