Carrefour, already well established in the major cities of the mainland, has opened its first store in Haikou. The French-run store spread over two floors has just about everything imaginable and is the "hot spot" for the locals to spend their money. And spend they do! Don't go over the weekends as the checkout lines are long and slow.
What to buy: There is a huge range of just about everything. I bought video CDs, DVDs of western movies, foodstuffs of local origin, Chinese tea, and coconut products for which Hainan Island is well known.
What to pay: Prices are reasonable as can be expected from hypermarkets.
