the 'Li and Mao' cultural village listed on the map may sound attractive, but DO NOT ever go there. firstly, they charge ridiculously high rates at the entrance and once inside, there really is nothing much to see. the local girls will usher the men into this room to perform a mock wedding ceremony after which the men will have to pay at least 100RMB as 'dowry'. you wanna take pictures of the cute kids? sure, after you pay them. basically, you do nothing inside but pay and pay them.
Unique Suggestions: hopefully, you understand 'pu tong hua' as the guide inside will speak that while 'explaining' their culture. they will (maybe) at least mention what you have to pay for before the girls cling onto you to take photos which you don't want and have to pay for. the girls are aggressive. they WILL cling onto the men and if you take out a wad of cash to pay, thay will snatch the money right out of your hands. i've witnessed this many times.
Fun Alternatives: just stay at the beaches at sanya. nothing much elsewhere on the island.
Verdict is split on this place. This is the supposedly the highlight of the place, once the furthest reach of known Chinese territory, and hence rich in history. Distractors called it 2 big boulders on the beach. You pay 65RMB to enter to see landscaped gardens and statues, a reasonably scenic stroll along the coastline and then, horridly right into hoards of vendors selling knitknacks and even larger hordes of tourists. Must see for the "romantics" in some of us; a tourist trap for some others due to the hordes of crowds!
Unique Suggestions: Pretend the hordes of tourists are invisible....
Fun Alternatives: Stick to Dadonghai or Yalong Bay beaches.
I know the Hainan Island Tourism authorities really want the tag "Hawaii Of The Orient" to stick, but ....those horrid Hawaiian shirts in gaudy neon colours?? I need sunglasses just to ensure my eyes don't hurt.
Fun Alternatives: Stick to the board-shorts, swimming costumes and trunks folks. Really!
I have bought a cats’ eye ring ( a cat’s eye stone be inserted on the ring) from a company in Wanning of Hainan. When back home after wearing it only for one day, to my surprise, the cat’s eye stone has lost from the ring! Obviously, it is problem of quality. I have sent a complaint to the company and the government department concerned of Hainan province, but come to nothing.
So, mind when buying souvenir from this company!
