Beautiful beaches, great weather, not crowded, no pollution, clean,
Con
I don't know the bad thing in Sanya, maybe the only one is that the price of sight spot's ticket is a little high.
In a nutshell
More than just Palm Trees and white sand beach
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Bring any clothes or shoes you might need. There are no foreign brands available here, except for fake stuff mainly suited to middle-aged or elderly, short people.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: We haven't specifically looked for anything, but judging by the poor availability of foreign and many mainstream Chinese brands in hotels and around the tourist areas, bring everything you might need.
Photo Equipment: Film choice seems very limited here. B&W forget it. I haven't seen any slide film. Kodak Gold 100 available everywhere if you call that film. Fuji seen also. Several out-of-date films seen!
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring everything you might need. There is probably a camping shop in Sanya city, but don't depend on it.
Miscellaneous: If you need the following, we haven't seen it (or have seen it only rarely):
- Nescafe (even the Nescafe 2+1 sachets so ubiquitous elsewhere in China), Coffeemate
- foreign brand cigarettes and chocolates
- maps
