Sanya Things to Do

  • Tianya Tropical Marine World (Zoo)

I can't find the official zoo name in English. I remembered that there are dolphins show, sea lions show, seals show in the zoo. The parrot show left me a deep impression. As long as you took the ten dollar ( less would not work) , parrots would fall into your hands and took the bill away.

The coral is already very heavily damaged in the area (see separate review) and is supposed to be protected as a...

  • The Tsat People

The tourism information on the Internet and in the one English booklet we have discovered refers to the Li, Miao and Hui populations of the Sanya area, yet this underplays the uniqueness of Sanya's local Muslim population. In China, Asiatic Muslim peoples (as opposed to Turkic) are always referenced as Hui, yet this is an insignificant ethnographic...

Sanya Warnings and Dangers

  • Hard Beds

A word of warning to the weak like me. The beds in some of the hotels are very hard. We stayed in three and i nearly broke my back. I had to resort to putting three quilts under a sheet for cushioning. I am told hard beds are best for a warm climate.Amazing though you get used to the beds after a while though :)

Sanya What to Pack

  • by mke1963 Written Dec 30, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Bring any clothes or shoes you might need. There are no foreign brands available here, except for fake stuff mainly suited to middle-aged or elderly, short people.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: We haven't specifically looked for anything, but judging by the poor availability of foreign and many mainstream Chinese brands in hotels and around the tourist areas, bring everything you might need.

Photo Equipment: Film choice seems very limited here. B&W forget it. I haven't seen any slide film. Kodak Gold 100 available everywhere if you call that film. Fuji seen also. Several out-of-date films seen!

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring everything you might need. There is probably a camping shop in Sanya city, but don't depend on it.

Miscellaneous: If you need the following, we haven't seen it (or have seen it only rarely):
    - Nescafe (even the Nescafe 2+1 sachets so ubiquitous elsewhere in China), Coffeemate
    - foreign brand cigarettes and chocolates
    - maps
