This is perhaps Tangshan's biggest tourist attraction (meaning about three and four foreign tourists come daily). The museum commemorates the city of Tangshan, its people, and the 1976 earthquake there that killed over 250,000 people. As the museum states, though the 7.8-magnitude earthquake obliterated the city and became the deadliest earthquake in the history of the world, the city has risen from its ashes and become more powerful than before. The museum is divided into six exhibits. The first exhibit explains Tangshan Shih and it's place on the map; the second and the third exhibits focus on the earthquake. The last three exhibits, all upstairs, are propaganda on Tangshan's importance in the world, and it's big business in coal mining, porcelain, hydroelectric power, and it's giant port (even though the neighboring port cities of Tianjin and Qinhuangdao are much larger than it). Despite the propaganda, it's a good place to spend two hours, but be sure you know how to read Chinese, since none of the exhibits are in English, and your Y5 will be wasted.)
