Chengde

Maybe the best known city in Hebei Province is Chengde, the former summerresidence of the Emperors. The climate is not as hot as in Beijing. The area offered good hunting and a big area for walking and enjoying the nature. Of the former palaces only a few ruins and some pavillons remain. More impressive are some temples of the time of Emperor Qianlong, some of them remind of wellknow Tibetan Temples.

First Pass Under Heaven

This (and Chengde) is the largest (foreign) tourist attraction of Hebei. This is town where the Great Wall of China meets the sea. The actual end of the wall is at Laolongtou (Old Dragon Head) four km out from the city, but inside the actual city, there is the First Pass Under Heaven, the first major pass on the Great Wall.

Bank in Tangshan

The second largest city in Hebei (after Shijiazhuang) is Tangshan, a giant commercial center that has a large harbor as well as being a producer of hydroelectric power and coal. The city was flattened in 1976 by a 7.8 earthquake, and over 250,000 people died, making it the deadliest earthquake in history. Today the city is relatively modern, with new buildings and structures. There isn’t much to see there except for a museum that commemorates the earthquake.

Mountains along the Highway

This highway connects Beijing and Harbin (thus Jing-Har), running four provinces, including Hebei. We traveled the entire length of the length within Hebei. The four major cities along the way are Tangshan, Beidaihe, Qinhuangdao, and Shanhaiguan. The first part of the highway runs mostly through farmland, etc, but about halfway between Tangshan and Qinhuandao, the topography changes and low mountains appear. There was a lot of haze and smog during our visit, so we couldn't see very far. It might not be scenic, but it easily connects some of Hebei's most interesting cities.
