The area around Xuanhua is known for coal mining and quite surprisingly for growing grapes and making wine. I did not taste any of this. and I did not see any wine growing along the hills. Butit was very misty on this day. Near the drum tower is a small market, where people sell the grapes.

When we visited a small shopping center we came across this small temple. My guide (the girl in front) told me, that this used to be part of a bigger tempel in the past. The temple had been torn down for the moderns shops. But one little building remained: the Temple of the Money God.

There is a mayer hoghlight, wha you yould go to Xuanhua: the murals of some tombs of the Liao-Dynasty (1093 - 1117). These tombs have been excavated not far from Xuanhua. You can reach them by taxi.
The murals are spectacular! Scenes showing everyday's life of the ministers burried here. The colors look fresh and clear. I did not find much about this tomgs in internet. I have seen two of them. Some are still to be excavated. Please make sure, that the tombs will be open, when you visit. You can ask the people working in the souvenir-shop at the drum tower in Xuanhua.
It is not allowd to take fotos in the tombs.

Like many Chinese towns Xuanhua has a bell and a drum tower. These towers were used to tell the time to people: During daytime the bell was rung about every two hours. During the night it was the sound of the drum, which signaled the time. At 5pm it signalled, that the gates of the city wall were closed. At 7 a.m. the drum gave its last signal and afterwards the bell started.
Around those towers a few old buildings can be found.
In Xuanhua Bell- and Drum Tower are almost the last remains of the past. Modern highrise buildings line the wide streets.

In Xuanhua you can see some remains of a city wall, crumbling down. In the rain I could almost see, how the earth of the wall dissolves and flows away. Not really a "Must See".

Xuanhua is a sad city in Hebei Province with a population of about 300.000 people. The only reason to visit are the beautiful murals of the Liao-Tombs.
