While I was planning to Luoyang, I was in the dilemma whether to visit Shaolin because I was not a big fan to Shaolin Kung Fu or Chinese Martial Art. I thought I was going to visit Temple after Temples and see a lot of monks. In fact, my experience with Shaolin is beyond my imagination. When I arrived, I felt so peaceful and exciting as the main...

  • OrmondeW's Profile Photo

by OrmondeW Written Feb 9, 2005

You can hire a covered boat with a rower who will take you for a spin on the lake for what appears to be a set fee. It's a very pleasant way to spend an hour or so. Howeverm when you get back to shore you are likely to be told/shown a sign saying that there is an additional charge to pay.

Unique Suggestions: Fortunately we had a Mandarin speaking friend who engaged the vendor in a lot and apparently vulgar discussion of their respective parentages! I guess if you don't speak the language and don't have anyone with you who can - then it's probably easier to be prepared to pay the extra. It's still a nice boat ride!

    Dengfeng Things to Do

Bring your sons daughters to Shaolin Temple, I saw many Kungfu students age around 8-10 only, worldwide tourists taking photos like mad especially at these young students. • Wonderful food market (mainly by night)

    Kaifeng Restaurants

I ate there for almost every meal. I loved the sugarcane juice. Fresh sugarcane juice (which I love in Singapore) is so hard to find in China! I liked that particular old uncle who sold it so much, I bought at least 1 cup everytime I went to the market. Bet you anything he was disappointed when I finally left! Xinzheng Transportation

Taxis are 3 yuan to start, and don't go for more than 8-10 yuan any trip around town. It's a nice alternative to buses during cold days, since the buses can get crowded. Xinzheng Shopping

Don't be afraid to buy fruit in the market. It's generally safe, just wash it. Bananas are 4 yuan/kilo, apples and oranges are not far off. Don't be surprised if fruit is more expensive here than in the big cities in china...it's harder to get produce here. But it's still really cheap. Meals: 1 yuan for street food, which again is generally safe,...

  • Traffic.

    Xinzheng Warnings and Dangers

As in the rest of China, traffic laws are more of a suggestion. And rural china is much worse...the lack of police officers seems to allow people more freedom to drive like maniacs. However, the roads are in great condition, something somewhat strange for a 3rd world country.

    Song Shan Things to Do

In the park there is a gondola up Song Shan and a chairlift that I took up a smaller mountain. The view was great with the leaves turning. The view was just great. There were a few trails up the mountain. I believe it is possible to hike up either mountain if so desired.

  • A Kung Fu Show

    Song Shan Things to Do

This is why you came to Shao Lin and this area, to see Kung Fu. The show is 20 RMB and half an hour. They start with some regularity. It seemed rather professional. Song Shan Tourist Traps

I'd like to say that I have never called anything a tourist trap thus far in China. These are the two most famous parts of the Song Shan park, and they aren't particularly grand. If this is the first Chinese temple or pagoda you've seen then they will be interesting. If you have seen others in China, nothing seperates these from others. The setting...

    Shaolinsi Things to Do

I forgot how much we paid for this show, but I think it's worth to go have a look at it. As I said on the introduction page, I'm not really a martial arts fan. But the show doesn't take too long and what they show can be quite impressive sometimes.

  • Pagoda Forest

    Shaolinsi Things to Do

The Pagoda Forest is the most impressive place in Shaolinsi. It's the burial place for the head monks of the temple, and for each one they built a pagoda with inscriptions that characterize that monk and the age he lived in. I heard that recently the head monk died and they built a new pagoda for him, with pictures of computers and such on it. Some...

  • The temple - greener than most

    Shaolinsi Things to Do

The temple was one of the first I ever visited in China. By now I don't really want to visit temples anymore, because for me they're more or less all the same. But when I look back on it, this is one of the nicest temples I've visited, because there are a lot more trees in and around it. So it's nicer to walk around in.
