It can take a long time to get around western and nrth-western Hunan province because the distances are all greater than they look and the roads are narrow. In 2005, two major road links are being constructed: one will connect Shaoyang with Guiyang in Guizhou. The other will connect Huaihua north through Jishou to Changde. Both roads are unlikely to be open before 2008 at the earliest.
Count on using the G roads until then, using an average speed of no more than 45kph for travelling through the area.
Most roads are in good condition, but you are sharing them with a lot of traffic, pedestrians and livestock.
