Just a Street: The Mosque marks the spot.

Hohhot's mosque, built in Chinese style, is fronted by vendors selling baked goods, sweets and other unmissable items. To the left of the mosque, as you stare uncertain past the old men sitting at the entrance, and behind the bike parking lot, is an alleyway lined with aromas of fried pork-filled things, (poetic, I know) which are greasy and horrible for you, but not suprising for fried, greasy things, excellent snacks. Sit down at one of the vendors (we frequented the second to last vendor on the right, just before the pool tables) and eat noodles (hand cut or egg noodles, I believe) with some vegetables and sauces... It only costs 2.50 yuan for a bowl of those noodles.

    Three images.

Favorite Dish: Street food is many things, but often it is some of the best food. This place, like the hotdog vendors in Monterrey, is a prime example of that.

  • Noodle shop: Quick and filling by Dazhao Lamasery

Great little shop, serving up plates of sizzling mutton noodle soup and mutton with spring onions (aha! someone's come from Dongbei then!)
There is no menu: just ask for what you want.

    Favorite Dish: The mutton noodles.
One patron informed me that beef is rarely as fresh as mutton in Hohhot.

Little Fat Sheep Hot Pot City: Hotpot in Hohhot

    Hotpot in Hohhot

There is a restaurant on Xilin Guole Beilu, just down the road (20 minutes walk or so) from the Railway Hotel in Hohhot. You enter, are whisked upstairs by a hostess, and sit down to a menu of hotpot choices. There is an English version if you ask for it.

The hotpot is many things. It is greasy, it is hot. It is excellent, especially on a cold day, and it is filling. It is unhealthy, it is good with a local beer. I highly recommend this place, as it seems to be a good representative of the hotpot idea.

Favorite Dish: The hotpot we got in Hohhot was divided into two parts within the same large, steel bowl. Part one was red, spicy and part two was white, and not so spicy. Both sides had spices of various and unrecognizable type, and our choices were mutton, potato noodles, potatoes, and sausage. The sausage had an odd taste after being cooked, but the rest was quite welcome.

    Fruit Vendors: Fresh Fruit

    Fruit Vendor

I guess it's still health food even though we don't know what poisons were used on it... and disregarding all the pollution that falls on it every day... but fruit, good and usually fresh, is available many places around town. Cheap and easy- just don't pay too much. It's hard to say what the going rates will be, but 50 yuan per banana is not right.
