Also-Milo: Very good western and Chinese food!
Fullmoonfever profile photo

3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Also-Milo is a chain of coffee houses in China. But the only one I have been to is also a full service restaurant with an extensive menu of both Chinese and western foods. The Also-Milo I ate at (several times) was located in an area that was preferred by western business travelers, so its is possible that not all Also-Milo restaurants offer as much western food selections as this one.

I had both western and Chinese and found everything be very good. By all means try the Chinese, its some of the best I had in Changzhou, but if you want a steak, this is the place to go. As a matter of fact, Also-Milo not only offers several steaks to choose from, but they are the best I have found in China so far.

Favorite Dish: Try a steak or one of the "Hot Pots".

Also-Milos do serve alcoholic drinks.

LUCY'S BAR: BEST WESTERN BAR IN CHANGZHOU

LUCY'S BAR is the best bar going these days in Changzhou. It has everything you need. Western Music ( you pick whomever you want to hear). American TV live and prerecorded events by request.
Where else can you watch the NFC playoff games or the Datona 500.

There is the only western live rock band in Chanzhou too. "the Changzhou Allstars"
There is a standard size pool table and tournaments from time to time.

Best of all, you don't get hassled for drinks or ripped off. Lucy keeps a tight reign on things. This won't be the case at the other bars in the area. So be carful.

Good company too. Mostly westerners with a few chinese here and there.

Xiao Zhou Xian: Off the beaten path, but delicious!

Xiao Zhou Xian

If you're not looking for this restaurant, you'll probably walk right by it. Xiao Zhou Xian is a small, family-owned restaurant. You're not likely to find any expats here, or English speaking staff, but the food and prices are great. Every expat and local I've introduced to Xiao Zhou Xian loved the food and returned often. If you don't speak Chinese, just have a Chinese-speaking friend write down a few of their favorite dishes. The menu is very diverse. Odds are they'll serve those dishes at Xiao Zhou Xian.

I ate at Xiao Zhou Xian several times each week for the 8 months I lived in the apartment compound next to the restaurant. We typically fed our family of five for 60 to 80 RMB total (USD 1.50 to 2.00 per person), and often had leftovers. The drink menu is very limited: bottled water, Tsing Tao and Tian Mu Hu beer, Cola, and of course tea and bai jiu.

Parking near the restaurant, like everywhere in Changzhou, is very limited. Xiao Zhou Xian is located near an office building and several small shops, so the restaurant can be a bit crowded at lunch time on weekdays.

Favorite Dish: Overall the food is great, but "jing jiang niu rou li" is a standout.

Monkey King Pizza: Pizza, expats & more

Monkey King Pizza

Monkey King Pizza has a broad, affordable menu and offers something for every taste: Western, Middle Eastern & Asian. Located in the Xin Bei District of Changzhou near He Hai University, the restaurant is a very popular meeting place for the city's expatriates as well as locals. Unless you are travelling at rush hour, the restaurant is a 5 minute taxi ride from the city center.

The photo shows Monkey King's old store front, but the restuarant recently moved next door into a newly remodeled, 3-storey space. The restaurant is clean and casual. Even better than the excellent food are husband and wife owners, Zeyad and Li Fang, who always welcome guests personally. The environment is very inviting and the staff speaks English.

The prices make eating at Monkey King even more enjoyable, and friendly for any travel budget. The restaurant offers very good value for the money. Entrees, pizza and appetizers are more affordable at Monkey King than at other western & pizza restaurants in Changzhou.

Favorite Dish: The menu at Monkey King is varied and the food is tasty. The bruschetta is my favorite, but the pizza and entrees are very good as well. Start off with an appetizer (e.g., bruschetta), followed by a Caesar salad and pizza: great value for the money.
